  • Future Fambo’s Album Evolve Makes Its’ Top 10 Debut on iTunes Chart!

Dancehall Star Future Fambo has released his album Evolve – The Uprise which makes its’ Top 10 debut on the iTunes chart making Dancehall history for the veteran artist!

The album, Evolve – The Uprise, is the first ever released by the artist, marking an important milestone in his career.  The choice in album title is poignant as Fambo has evolved from releasing singles, to releasing a complete body of work.  To have the disc debuted on the iTunes chart is icing on the cake!

Produced by Blaze Entertainment Records, based in the United States, the album features 13 tracks that are heavily influenced by EDM (Electronic Dance Music), and is heavily spiced by the artists patois vocals.  Songs like “WAVY,” “Wanna Be” and “Molleh” have tested well with fans in the Caribbean and Europe, while “The Bloodclaute Song” and “Rick Flair” continue to receive radio attention due to their popularity.

While speaking to DJ Unknown at Real Deal 106.1 FM in New York, Fambo described the albums creative process as being “forward thinking.”  Fambo elaborates by saying “the album had to be recorded with a party in mind that is going to happen.  Usually when I record I do it thinking about what happened in the past.  We flipped that script and I really like how it turned out.  It’s WAVY!”

Blaze Entertainment, producer of the record, adds that they were focused on the product, as well as the sonic connection for fans which plays into the visuals.  “It’s one thing to produce an album for a Veteran like Fambo” said Stylez, “and then it’s something else to produce music that combines the lingo, the patois, and the wave of the future which is EDM combined with Caribbean swag.  All tracks were carefully selected so all fans have to do is press play.”

Future Fambo is currently touring to support both physical and digital versions of his album.  He performs the lead single “The Bloodclaute Song” which is always received well.  His follow up single, “Rick Flair” has also received a lot of support from radio and live event DJs.  The music video for the song is currently being shot on location in Jamaica and New York.

Digitally distributed by Tropic Electric, the album will be marketed to partygoers worldwide.  Future Fambo will be performing in the US, Jamaica, Canada and the UK.  The artist will also be on tour in Germany to promote the project.

  • Kim Phillips, son of Reggae Legend Glen Adams, Released Songs from his Father’s Previously Produced Catalogue – Frankie Paul

Kim Phillips, son of Glen Adams, has just released two powerful reggae songs, both performed by veteran reggae artist Frankie Paul and produced by Glen Adams prior to his death. The first track, titled “out in the deep,” is an inspirational record that deals with his – Frankie Paul’s – spiritual tenacity; While the second song, “too much guns” addresses the issue of gun control and/or the lack thereof.

Frustrated by all the violence taking place all over the world, Kim Phillips decided that it was time to share unreleased records from his father’s extensive catalogue, which is filled with the type of message-music needed for this day and age. Both tracks are being released on his newly formed label, Capo-Landmark Music, which is a spin off from Glen Adams’ Capo label from the seventies. Both songs can be streamed via the YouTube links below and DJs are invited to email for promo mp3s.

  • Barrington Levy Stole Sumfest 2016

CEO Mr. Biggs of Platinum Camp Records in association with Reggae Sumfest presented for the first time in history, Barrington Levy and Beenie Man on stage in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Together they performed their mega hit single “Murderer” which sent the crowd in a mass frenzy after witnessing this historic performance.

It became a diplomatic affair as CEO Daddy Biggs arranged for music ambassador Shyne to fly to Jamaica from Belize to join Barrington Levy aka mellow canary for a surprise collaboration of their number one hit records “Bad Boys” and Bonnie and Shyne. The crowd erupted as the hip hop/reggae duo performed. It was a night of sheer pandemonium to see the two bad boys walk on stage for a final showdown.

Yet in another interesting move, Daddy Biggs of Platinum Camp Records has arranged a Latin American and a European tour for Levy in the final quarter of the year which commences in Chile in October 2016.

Barrington Levy is also promoting his latest single G.S.O.A.T, which means “Greatest Survivor of All Time”. The song is an excellently crafted masterpiece that is set to be released on August 6th to commemorate the great survivors of Jamaica and its independence.

Emancipated Voices – New Generation of Caribbean Poets

Reflections on 182 Years since the Formal End of Slavery in the British Caribbean

Three provocative, talented wordsmiths lead a celebration of self-determination, identity, place and purpose as the Caribbean Research Center at Medgar Evers College hosts the inaugural program of Poets & Passion – A Caribbean Literary Lime 10th Anniversary Season.

    Vladimir Lucien

    St. Lucian Vladimir Lucien

To commemorate the 1838 formalized end of chattel slavery in the British Caribbean the program features critically acclaimed poets, St. Lucian Vladimir Lucien, author of ‘Sounding Ground’, Samantha Thornhill from Trinidad & Tobago and author of ‘Odetta: Queen of Folk’, and Virgin Islander Tiphanie Yanique, author of ‘Wife’’.  These multiple award winning writers will take center stage on Wednesday, August 3 in a program of readings and discussion beginning at 7pm at the Central Brooklyn Campus of Medgar Evers College (CUNY), 1650 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.

Emancipated Voices – New Generation of Caribbean poets echoes both the indomitable spirit of the descendants of those who resisted the institutions of slavery in the Caribbean and the struggle for social and economic justice throughout the Caribbean Diaspora.

Lucien has been featured at the Miami Book Fair and the Read My World Festival in Amsterdam.  Most recently, he was Writer-in-Residence at the University of the West Indies (Mona Campus).  Described as “a collection that is alive with its conscious tensions: between divergent family visions of respectability and revolt, tradition and modernity”, Lucien’s debut collection, Sounding Ground, was the winner of the 2015 OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature

Thornhill has curated and produced poetry videos for Russell Simmons’ All Def Poetry and has performed her poetry internationally in a variety of contexts across the US, Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. Formally a lecturer at The Juilliard School, her ode to the folk legend Odetta in picture book form has been published by Scholastics.

Yanique, a professor at the New School, is an award winning poet and novelist.  Her poetry collection, Wife, is the winner of the 2016 OCM Bocas Award for Caribbean Poetry.  Author Christian Campbell, describes Wife as an “urgent book in which each poem is a “blood wedding deftly express(ing) a tough ambivalence—the risk of intimacy, the utter strangeness of love”.

A project of the Brooklyn-based Caribbean Cultural Theatre, Poets & Passion – A Caribbean Literary Lime platform has been a meeting place for Caribbean and Caribbean-American artists to share insights, creativity and heritage with immigrant audiences and the greater New York City community.  Designed for lovers of the magic of the written word, the platform has, over the past decade, featured over one hundred published writers in fiction and poetry in all the official languages of the region, Dutch, English, French; Spanish and related creoles.  Some of the more celebrated writers include Frost Medalist Kamau Brathwaite, Commonwealth Prize Winner Robert Antoni, and Man Booker Prize Winner Marlon James.

Other writers to be featured during the 10th Anniversary Season include novelists Elizabeth Nunez (Trinidad), Olive Senior (Jamaica); Bernice McFadden (US/Barbados) and children’s book author, Carol Mitchell (St. Kitts).

  • Recording Artist Jessi Campo Releases La Pasión de la Lupe

Recording Artist Jessi Campo Releases La Pasión de la Lupe

New tribute album pays homage to late queen of Latin soul, La Lupe

Miami, FL – July 20, 2016 – Jessi Campo, the Miami-based singer – songwriter who issued the digital-only single “Que Te Pedi” last week, has just released the accompanying full-length titled La Pasión de la Lupe. The album includes several remakes penned by the fiery Cuban performer La Lupe, who was known in the 1960s and 70s as the “Queen of Latin Soul”. The collection is now streaming on Spotify, and is available for purchase on and There are plans for a lyric video to accompany the first single “Que Te Pedi”, and a concept video for the single “Vivio La Vida”.

Produced by Jose D. Velazquez, the La Lupe cuts are legacy pieces for Jessi, who identifies with the artist’s passionate delivery and fiercely independent attitude. Campo’s father Giovanni worked with Tito Puente, famed Puerto Rican band leader and La Lupe producer. Now, a second generation of performers has worked together, as Tito PuenteJr. co-produced “Que Te Pedi” and “Se Acabo”. Velazquez is credited as the musical arranger and producer for the album, especially for his conceptualization of the signature boleros so reflective of a period of timeless music.

“This album was an amazing undertaking because it was a challenge to sing these boleros – I really had to step up my game,” says Jessi. “I’m a Latin-American, bilingual singer-songwriter used to recording my own original music. I had to improve my vocal prowess and Spanish articulation, and finally found my vocal mid-range. Velazquez was instrumental in helping me find the perfect key for these songs in order to achieve a warm and sultry sound. The whole process made me have to be a better musician.”

Jessi says that for the first time she did not feel she was handling a project all alone. “I had some great people come on board and I am so grateful for their help and expertise, which resulted in me overcoming my challenges. This album captures the passion and emotional essence of all women, with songs so powerful that as I sing them, I feel they are mine, or maybe it is La Lupe transporting me back in time.”

This album features another well-known La Lupe song called “La Tirana”. “Vivio La Vida”, co-written and produced by Michael NOMAD Ripoll (guitarist and musical director for Babyface), is an original song the artist wrote for her father. La Pasión was recorded during a five-month period at multiple locations, including Red Rock Studios, 42nd Street Studios, Big Wall Studios, and Nomads Place Studios.

Additional musical credits include Isaac Velasquez on drums, Manuel Gamez, William SigsismondiJr., Juan Ibarra and Abel Pabon on keyboards, Mike Orta (piano), Daniel Berroa (percussion), trumpets by Jose Chacon and Fernando Pena PereiraJose Velazquez on electric and upright basses, guitars and tres by Michael NOMAD Ripoll, Jason Beach on saxophones, and background vocals by Tony Cruz.

Born in New York of Latin descent, Jessi Campo first began singing and writing songs on her guitar at the age of 12. Jessi’s specialty is to capture a memorable moment through her lyrics and interpretations so that each person who is present feels her music. As a bilingual singer-songwriter and accomplished entertainer, Campo has toured Asia extensively, and had a performance role singing in Hebrew in the feature film Striptease during a scene featuring Burt Reynolds.

Inspired by family, especially parents Giovanni and Nina, who performed with many famous Latin music icons such as Tito Puente, Perez Prado, Beny More, and more, Jessi has released four full-length recordings: How Can I (2000), 2013’s At LastCon Corazon in 2014, and La Pasión de La Lupe (2016). Seven of her songs earned placement in the 2016 Dream Act legislation feature film called El Sueño, which premiered May 26 in El Paso, TX.

She produced a radio show called Straight from the Heart that webcast on iHeart Radio and, as well as on terrestrial radio in Boca Raton, FL on 1470 AM. She will soon be performing at venues such as Casabe 305 Bistro in Coral Gables, Piano Hollywood at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, and at the end of August, she is off to New Orleans to perform at several venues including the House of Blues. An album release party is scheduled for Friday, September 9, 2016 at the Cubaocho Museum & Performing Arts Center (1465 SW 8th St, #106, Miami, FL 33135).

Her new release titled La Pasión de La Lupe includes La Lupe classics like “Que Te Pedi” and “La Tirana”, plus other Cuban boleros and some original material, including a heartfelt tribute to her father called “Vivio La Vida”. The exceptional production work of Jose D. Velazquez captured the essence of the traditional Cuban sound, with a crossover fusion, featuring collaborations with musicians from Spain, Los Angeles and Miami.

Staying true to her gift as a songwriter there are two original songs on this album which she called upon her longtime friend Michael NOMAD Ripoll to produce “Quiero Ser” and the song written for her father “Vivio La Vida“.

  • Caribbean Entertainer Ricardo Drue Stamps His ID, Commits to Giving Back

Caribbean entertainer Ricardo Drue has certainly stamped his name and the ID brand in the minds of the youth of Antigua. His recently concluded ID children’s event hosted at the Merryland Amusement Park on the island, has left a mark in the minds of many, proving that Drue is indeed one to watch when it comes to the business of soca and carnival.

The ‘Professional’ is carving his space in the industry. He says he’s bent on ensuring that even as his name solidifies, his business acumen allows him to expand his net worth; but amid even that, he sees this aspect of delivery as something necessary, something that connects him to the people in quite a different way.

A father of four young boys, Ricardo believes that more must be done to preserve ‘youth’. “Kids are growing up way too fast in many instances. It’s our responsibility as adults to show them just how amazing it can be to be young. We have to make sure they enjoy every aspect of their childhood and give them really safe, clean, happy times,” he said. IDland, as the event was called, was Drue’s first in what will be an annual event in Antigua- the island of his birth. Some 5000 patrons attended and according to the reviews coming in, smiling faces and excited looks could be seen everywhere. “Parents really enjoyed themselves with their kids. It was hard to tell who had more fun,” said radio personality, TJ of Vybz FM radio in Antigua. These memories, the artiste says, are the ones he would like to cement in correlation with his name.

Building the ID brand has been a journey. In the past three years, Ricardo Drue has carefully distinguished himself in the industry. He believes there is much more than meets the eye, when it comes to the business of carnival, a business that he feels all artistes can and should capitalize on. “This is just the beginning,” he explained, noting that a strong and sturdy brand, which he is building, should not be merely used for the satisfaction of one simple ideal. “I love performing. I love sharing my music, my passion, with fans, but I also think every entertainer or personality, should at some point, evolve into something bigger, something that assures economic sustainability for years,” said Drue.

Drue’s single, ID, which was released post T&T carnival 2016, has been receiving favorable reviews across the region. Having backed up the track with the perfect video, the vibe of the song has emitted the energy of soca music in quite an endearing way and this too was realized at IDland on July 10th when the singer took the stage.

In the past few months Ricardo and his team has toured the Caribbean without failure, delivering to fans, his usual energetic performance. At IDland on July 10th, Antigua’s young and vibrant were treated to numerous rides, and besides Drue himself, entertainment came from a number of local acts, among them, Kid Viscous, Baby Eve, magician Guerin Hunte and the Antiguan Dance Academy. “All proceeds of the event goes to charity,” said Drue. “I feel it’s simply part of my social responsibility as an artiste,” he added. He now looks forward to Antigua’s competitions and events, this as the island nears its carnival showcase.

    About Martinique (

The Caribbean Island with French Flair, The Isle of Flowers, The Rum Capital of the World, The Isle of the Famed Poet (Aimé Césaire) – Martinique ranks among the most alluring and enchanting destinations in the world. As an overseas region of France, Martinique boasts modern and reliable infrastructure – roads, water and power utilities, hospitals, and telecommunications services all on par with any other part of the European Union. At the same time, Martinique’s beautifully unspoiled beaches, volcanic peaks, rainforests, 80+ miles of hiking trails, waterfalls, streams, and other natural wonders are the equal of neighboring Dominica to the north and St. Lucia to the south, so visitors here truly get the best of both worlds.

The currency is the Euro, the flag is Le Tricolour, and the official language is French, but Martinique’s character, cuisine, musical heritage, art, culture, common language, and identity are of a distinctly Afro-Caribbean inclination known as Creole. It is this special combination of modern world conveniences, pristine nature, and rich heritage that has earned for Martinique several notable distinctions in recent years, including being ranked in the Top 16 Places to go in 2016 by Condé Nast Traveler, named as a “Must-Visit” destination for 2015 by Caribbean Journal, “Best Caribbean Destination” by, and “Top Caribbean Island for Delectable Dining” by Caribbean Travel + Life. Don’t Send Me Away is a reggae/r&b fusion remix of a 1980 song I wrote with the late Davy Morris and Jimmy Tindal originally released with Garfield Fleming on lead for Beckett Records that hit #2 BillboardR&B in the U.S. and #1 Billboard R&B in the U.K.” says Capsicum CEO and A&R Director Roger Meltzer. “I’ve wanted to do a reggae remake of it since starting the label in 2009. I co-produced this new version with Mellow who not only voiced the song for us, but he also sang all the background vocals and played all the instruments in his home studio. He’s like scary gifted.”

Meltzer met Jamal “King Mellowman” Clarke completely by accident through his mother, Detroit gospel DJ and renowned radio talk show emcee Dolores Sistadee Barbee who will also be voicing a song for Capsicumthis summer. “It seems Mellow has been into music for as long as he can remember. According to his parents, he was singing even before he was talking. I knew instantly I wanted to work with these talented people” says Meltzer, “and this is but the first of what I hope will be a series of successful collaborations.”

  • Phases releases debut single, We Like It

The Phases Band, who hails from Vieux Fort, is pleased to announce the release of its debut single, We Like It, a soca, which with most of the instruments recorded live, represents a departure from the modern day practice where one sits at a computer and creates a riddim,  the composer need not be a musician,  knowledge of software and a library of sample loops are all what is required.

Given the way We Like It was created, it is no wonder that the song is  filled with musical joy, and speaks of musical sophistication. It’s a song with a great variety of sounds and verve,  its full of musical delights, and is anything but boring. We Like It is the marrying of kompa, cadence, soca, and latin to create a memorable soca. It’s music that is equally at home in a jazz festival or in a soca jam. It’s a song destined to be a classic, a song that composers will visit repeatedly for compositional ideas. It is a musician joy and a fan delight.

Attached is the full write-up for immediate promulgation, and below is an mp3 version and youtuble link for listening and airplay.

Headliners at this years’ festival are Cocoa Tea, Mavado, Barrington Levy, Elephant Man, Sanchez, Spragga Benz, Vershon, Romain Virgo and Jahmiel.  Each artist has a catalog of hit records that are enjoyed by Reggae and Dancehall fans young and mature.  In addition to these international greats, 2 time JUNO nominee and Canadian Songstress Ammoye will grace the stage as will musical siren Sielle, roots influenced Kaisha Lee, and upcoming Soulstress Mel Dube, Soca sensation Olatunji and Vern Maytone.

In addition to the incredible line up of artists, MIRF is pleased to confirm that a tribute to Sound System culture will be held on Friday August 26th before the start of the festival.  Deemed the ‘Festival within the Festival,’ the Sound System fest is the first of its’ kind in Canada, and will showcase another aspect of Jamaican culture through the dubplates of some of Canada’s most elite sounds.
