  • RSVP! – Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey LIVE @ SOB’s 8/7!

New York, NY – On Wednesday, August 7, the great Nigerian Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey, returns to New York City for a grand performance at SOB’s alongside a full live band and King Sunny Ade’s dancers! Born in Idogo, the Western region of Nigeria, the Jùjú pioneer’s musical talent was recognized early on when he was asked to lead the band at his Methodist Primary School. After moving to Lagos in the mid-1950s he played in various other bands before starting his own, the International Brothers, in 1964. They soon had a hit juju single “Ewa Wowun Ojumi Ri.” Though juju had been around for a while it was still highly influenced by Ghanaian highlife. Obey modernized the sound by adding the funkiness of Yoruba drumming, more Western-style guitars and drum-kits, and added multiple talking drums, where only one had been used before. That was the beginning of modern juju. As he says:

“It’s like cooking a soup. If you put in many different ingredients, it tastes richer and better”

“We are pleased that Daniel Levine is bringing his considerable experience and award-winning ‘trend spotting’ expertise to the State of the Industry Conference, where he will deliver a targeted and meaningful keynote message to conference delegates about providing more perfect visitor experiences,” said Sylma Brown, the director of CTO-USA Inc., the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO)’s New York-based office which overseas events in the Americas.

The State of the Industry Conference (SOTIC) is the Caribbean’s leading tourism conference, bringing together decision-makers from the public and private sectors, academics, travel professionals and journalists from the region and around the world. At this year’s event, themed, “Perfecting the Experience; Delivering Authenticity,” delegates will explore a range of elements that are critical to the development and success of the sector in the region. These include training and education, service quality, standards, visitor satisfaction, and community involvement.

“The conference should be particularly appealing to a cross section of the Caribbean tourism industry because experts will focus on how we utilize the latest technology with the attributes that make the Caribbean unique – the blessings of a vibrant and diverse culture, our welcoming and hospitable nature, our innate sense of humour, our musical talents and an enhanced dose of customer service to provide the authentic experience that our visitors seek and that will increase business to the region,” remarked Ms. Brown.

“Every participant will leave with ground-breaking ideas that will give the region a competitive edge because the authenticity of the Caribbean cannot be replicated. The media will leave with new story angles; the service providers will better understand from best practices the importance of overall excellent customer service; and the destinations will be exposed to the latest trends in technology that can keep their visitors connected and informed while in the region,” she added.

  • Swappi, Orlando Octave on the 868- PengCo Music Goes Against The Grain

July 22, 2013 (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) Music producers may come a dime a dozen these days in Trinidad and Tobago but good ones understand the value of honing their craft. For that reason, Pengco Music’s Randal Alexander has been making the rounds at international music conferences and the like in recent months, this of course, amid working on a project he’s referring to as Riddim 868- something that’s very different from anything done in Trinidad and Tobago in the past.

Swappi and Orlando Octave recently wrapped up work with Alexander, completing Riddim 868 in what has been described by the super producer as a unique twist to the norm. He explained that his aim this time around was to experiment between the median of a single and a riddim, having chosen two artistes only, rather than three or more, which would have made the project a riddim. Noting that a single is done by one artiste, Randal’s rationale was that two people is the median, and this in itself, relative to production, is quite different.

    Randal Alexander

    Swappi

Orlando Octave has been relatively quiet for a while but Swappi has been making waves since Carnival 2013. Now, with his single, ‘Protect Me’ on the project, Randal says it is likely that Swappi will dominate the airwaves further. Octave’s single is called ‘Twerk It’- a sexual connotation no doubt, but one that Randal feels Octave’s young audience will find relatable. “Both of these artistes represent the youth audience and ideally, that’s the demographic that this project aims at appealing to,” said Alexander. On the name of the project, he said he simply wanted to make it completely relative to Trinidad and Tobago, explaining, “I want people who are looking on from outside of Trinidad and Tobago to know that we’re not only about carnival, Trinidad James and Nicki Minaj- we’ve got a lot more to offer.”
Videos for both singles are already in the works with Swappi’s having been started this past weekend in the Sealots, Trinidad community he grew up in. It was the first time Swappi had returned to the area to shoot a video since he shot to fame, some years ago.

Pengco Music has worked with a number of renowned artistes over the years. Most recently however, Alexander and his team at the studio have been hard at work with Trinidad native, Aaron Marquez. They’ve been arduously been seeking perfection on an album being completed by Marquez. “It’s almost completed,” assured Alexander, in the same breathe noting that he has a lot of faith in Marquez’s ability. The production house also works closely with several corporate entities. “We’ve been doing jingles here at home and abroad. We did the Ferreira Optical ‘One Plus One’ jingle,” he said. Amid all of that, Randal has been working on other musical projects with Swappi, Orlando, Nigel Rojas and others, including Jamaican entertainer, Gyptian. “I have over 30 new songs to release from various artistes out of T&T and Jamaica,” said Alexander. He said he expects these to be released continuously between this present time and the next 18 months.

  • Joseph Childress Premieres ‘Dance With Me’ On Pigeons and Planes || Debut LP ‘The Rebirths’ Out August 20th On Empty Cellar Records

This is the debut full-length by Joseph Childress. The ten songs on this record, dubbed “The Rebirths” by fans, were penned on the road during nearly two years of “hard traveling” – hopping freight trains, hitchhiking, and eventually living out of a car. All this came to a halt shortly after finding trouble in New Orleans, prompting Joseph to find his way back to his childhood home in the Colorado Rockies. Once there, he locked himself in the bathroom with his road-worn guitar – its neck cracked while jumping from a train – and recorded this album. Filled with young wisdom, heartbreak, and spirited jubilee, this self-recording of Joseph Childress is a stirring introduction to a young songwriter with a soul-piercing voice and an undeniable gift of song.

    eegwehrh

A low-fi snapshot of his experiences, The Rebirths captures a moment of euphoria as Joseph’s personal stories unfold into timeless songs. Peppered with thumps, creaks, improvised percussion, the weather outside the bathroom window… these recordings serve as a raw document of the time and space in which these tracks were laid. Joseph’s emotionally charged voice is powerful as it tackles tragedy and triumph over guitar that ranges from intricate finger-style to furious strumming. Fans of haunted troubadours Jason Molina, Jackson C. Frank, Townes Van Zandt and early lo-fi pioneers will find many similarities in Joseph’s music, but even more striking will be Joseph’s refreshingly original command of song.

In print due to relentless demand, this presentation of The Rebirths – available worldwide on bright white vinyl and digital – is newly mixed by The American Opry and mastered for the first time by Paul Oldham.
