Dancehall producer Jah Snowcone, who produced Sean Paul’s international hit and the Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper “Temperature,” pools his talent onto the EP for the throwback dancehall vibes on “Nuh Fraid.” The blazing track has been in steady rotation locally in Jamaica and across reggae/dancehall platforms internationally, even recently making its debut on David Rodigan’s show on BBC 1Xtra, airing across the UK.

  • Spreading the music globally-FREEMYNZ

    Shango

    Shango Trex-ONE LOVE JAMAICA FESTIVAL-JAPAN

    Catapila

    Catapila Nevin-ONE LOVE JAMAICA FESTIVAL-JAPAN

    The duo FREEMYNZ captivating fans-globally!

When Reggae musicians David “Catapila” Nevin and Dennis “Shango Trex” Llewellyn embarked on their individual music careers, they never imagined one day they would evolve into the duo, music lovers would come to know as Freemynz. Stemming from a need to be open minded, and being totally oblivious to society’s ‘box’ mentally…Freemynz (pronounced free minds) was born.

Hailing from New York by way of Kingston, Jamaica, Shango Trex has been on the music scene for decades. An expert musician who mastered the trumpet at an early age, Shango Trex also played for The National Cadet Orchestra in Jamaica. Starting out like most performers singing in the church choir, this musician would soon bring to fruition his passion for music as a professional performer.

Also a native Jamaican, David “Catapila” Nevin was born in the parish of St Thomas. Much like Shango Trex, Catapilla has also been on the reggae music scene for decades. A professional drummer who harnessed his craft in local churches, Catapila started out playing the acoustic guitar. With no passion for the instrument, however, Catapila wasted no time in moving on to the pastime he loved, drumming. That pastime developed into a profession, and before long, Catapila was playing at hotels in Ocho Rios, located on Jamaica’s fabulous North Coast on a regular basis.

Playing with the Riddim Force Band early in his career, Catapila was eventually offered a one year contract, with the band to play in Japan. This was a big break Catapila had long desired, and seized the opportunity quickly. “I was now able to spread the joy of reggae music, inspirational music to the people of Japan.” After going back and forth from Japan to Jamaica, for years, Catapila who speaks fluent Japanese, has been calling Japan his second home now for the past few years.

Shango Trex also carried on his pursuit towards fulfilling his dream as a singer and musician, and recorded various tracks for producers such as Avex Trax and others. Shango in an interview admits he had no plans of becoming a musician. His dream was to become an Electrical Engineer. Music seemed to be his destiny however, and one can never outrun what is meant to be. Shango Trex migrated from Kingston, Jamaica and headed to New York City in 2003. During that time he ventured to Mexico, London, and Japan, before returning to New York City where he now resides.

What is meant to be will always be as the saying goes. Simply keep your mind free and be open to pleasant surprises. It was no accident that Shango Trex and Catapila met in Tokyo, Japan while both were on tour in the early nineties. After forming an immediate bond of friendship and brotherhood, the two decided to form Freemynz in 2013. They seemed destined to work as a duo, because no matter the distance geographically, these two musical giants always wound up performing in the same clubs, and bands in and around Japan. They were each recording for separate labels, but often times collaborated on each others’ projects.“
The duo was born last year after working on some projects together. “Rise & Shine” and a cover version of Billy Ocean’s “Caribbean Queen” were two ventures we teamed up on. Forming a duo was something we had often discussed over the years, so it has been forthcoming,” stated Shango.

The “Rise & Shine” charity project came about after the horrific earthquake which ravaged Japan in March 2011. Having such close ties to Japan, Shango Trex & Catapila felt the need to lend a helping hand to the people and area affected by the disaster. They decided to lend their talents, their most valuable assets, and the “Rise & Shine” project was born.

The track “Rise & Shine” was written by Dennis “Shango Trex” Llewellyn & David “Catapila’ Nevin. It was produced and arranged by Takayoshi “Edison” Watanabe, Shango Trex and Catapila. The song was released and distributed by “19 Box” (Duke Box) Label in Japan in March 2013, on the two year anniversary of the earthquake.

Artists supporting the projects were: Shinehead, I-Octane, Lenn Hammond, Anthony Redrose, Simone Gordon aka Simone G, Avril “Starfire” Aiken, Sango, Worm Bass, Vybrant, Ninja Ford, George Maralious Cockle, Prophecy and the Hawaiian artiste, Iakopo. Sly & Robbie also did a remix which will be released soon. The proceeds from this single will benefit the disaster relief effort which is still ongoing.

The name ‘Freemynz’ was inspired by the duos ability to ‘express one’s thoughts through lyrics’. “Free up your minds and live, so that your light can shine throughout the universe.” Freemynz is the only word which can define Shango Trex and Catapila’s musical works as a duo. With both parties being multi-talented, this duo is a force to be reckoned with. Both members play instruments, sing, toast, write, produce and arrange.

As a duo, Freemynz will be growing from “strength to strength” with the support of their team. They are currently working on an EP, and the first single “That Rush”, will be released this summer to officially launch the duo. The video for this crossover/pop single will be shot on location in Japan. Fans can also look forward to a small promotional tour in Japan to promote the EP.
Fun, uplifting, and inspirational vibes is what Freemynz delivers. They are not messengers, they’re not a brand, they’re just two extremely talented musicians determined to encourage others to cultivate their own thoughts and ideas, thus freeing their minds.

    -BET.com

Bunji Garlin kicks into high gear this week to rev up for his new album Differentology, available August 12, 2014 on RCA and VP Records. The Trinidadian soca star teams up with A$AP Ferg on the album’s latest single Truck On D Road (Remix), produced by Toronto’s Doc and Jes. Funkmaster Flex exclusively premiered the trap remix on Hot 97 and InFlexWeTrust.

Garlin knew the Ferg would be the perfect fit for the track. “I met Ferg in Trinidad when he came for Carnival 2014 and like that we just clicked. We started talking to each other on all sorts of music topics like we’ve known each other for years, so when I sent “Truck On The Road” to remix for the different markets, it was just a breeze. He flipped into Trini lingo. Seeing that he has some roots here, he wanted to fit into the vibe of it,” he explains.

The remix appears on Garlin’s much anticipated album Differentology, which will be his first full-length release since 2007’s Global and follows his recently released digital-only EP Carnival Tabanca. On the new 13-track set, Garlin effortlessly blends EDM, hip hop and dancehall with soca.

In support of the new album, he will also be hitting the road throughout the summer with dates on Mad Decent’s Block Party tour and around NYC’s Labor Day festivities (including Hot 97’s On Da Reggae Tip).

He has won the “Ragga Soca Monarch” competition in both 2000 and 2001, the Young King title in 2001, the coveted title of International Soca Monarch in 2002 and then reclaimed this title for three more years. In the past year, he has taken the genre to new heights. His explosive single “Differentology (Ready For The Road),” which was remixed by Major Lazer as well as Busta Rhymes, is currently a massive hit in North America more than a year after its release in the Caribbean. In 2013, the single received a Soul Train Award win for Best International Performance, was featured on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, won NYC’s HOT 97 FM’s Battle of The Beats competition and received critical praise across the board from NPR, Rolling Stone, The FADER and more. • VEGAS AND LATTY J RULE ON NEW TRACK

    July 24, 2014

VEGAS AND LATTY J RULE ON NEW TRACK

Kingston, Jamaica:- High riding dancehall star Mr. Vegas has released a collab with Latty J, one of the hottest new recruits on the Dancehall Scene, dubbed Who Rule.

The track and video, which was released this week is another from Mr. Vegas’ MV Music outfit featuring one of the artistes in his stable.

The August Town native has been bubbling up with several hot singles over the past few months. She recently bussed big shots on the Mint Tea Riddim with Shape & Figure and Irie Vibes on the Protector Riddim. She was also presented and accounted for on Jah Snow Cone’s Nuh Fraid Riddim with a track titled Put Up Unuh Han and before, claimed God A God on another collab with Mr. Vegas. On all tracks Latty J demonstrated dexterity and skill in handling the riddim; peppering it with catchy lyrics in her own gritty feminine style.

Happy with the latest release Latty J says she is rising to the next level, “Who Rule is a kind of coming of age for me. I have been in the business learning and showing the people my talent and this track is just a culmination of part of my musical Journey.”
Mr. Vegas for his part is happy he and Latty J could have the chemistry for such a conceptually difficult song to pull off, “When Pappa San and Lady G did the same concept it was a smash because they had the chemistry and now in 2014 Latty J and myself have come up with a similar feel but with different metaphors and similes. We work well together and she is one of the new artistes who will inherit the future of dancehall”.

Who Rule features Mr. Vegas and Latty J in competition as to who wears the pants in the house. It is a humorous take on male to female relationships and brings added fun to the dancehall landscape which is sometimes void of humour and the harmless banter of forgone years.

  • GROUNDATION | – COMING HOME – NORTH AMERICA TOUR IS COMING TO SOB’S | WEDNESDAY JULY 30TH | SPECIAL GUEST KIWI

Since the dawn of recorded sound, music can be seen as a giant tapestry to which all musicians lend their creative influence. One band focused on the explosive evolution of this musical ecosystem is Groundation. Rooted in the reggae one-drop sound of Jamaica, Groundation seamlessly incorporates the harmonic, polyrhythmic, and improvisational elements of jazz, breathing new life into both genres. As one critic described it, Groundation begins at the crossroads where Burning Spear meets John Coltrane.

Groundation’s unique reggae fusion can be heard from villages in Thailand, to the favelas of Brazil, from the mountains of New Zealand, to Moroccan cafes and college dorm rooms in the United States. Since 1998 they’ve performed in more than thirty countries on six continents, sharing the stage with such diverse artists as Jimmy Cliff, Sly and the Family Stone, The Roots, Kanye West, Queens of the Stone Age and Sonic Youth.

So it is only fitting that the Summer of 2014 sees the band returning to their homelands for the Coming Home 2014 North American Tour, where the band will be playing in cities they haven’t visited in many years. Including dates in as far flung locations as Texas, Oregon, Florida, Massachusetts, and all points in between, this is the homecoming that the band and their legions of fans have been looking forward to.

Though their albums have become modern benchmarks in production quality and story telling, the true power of Groundation, like their namesake ceremonies, really comes through in the live setting. Though sometimes likened to a Reggae “jam band,” due to their epic shows featuring constantly changing set lists and extended improvisations, the band is more firmly rooted in the Jazz tradition. Whether through their uniquely gifted musicianship or visionary lyricism, Groundation pulls off the singular feat long mastered by true Roots Reggae—-rough and revolutionary messages draped in appealing and soothing music. And the results speak for themselves.

  • Lynx Unruly & Maxwell Collins

The island of Jamaica has produced some of the most talented and versatile performers music has ever known. Dancehall, a musical art form in Jamaica, boasts a plethora of entertainers who are now gaining prominence within the pop and hip-hop genres.

From the Kingston/St Andrew region of the island, currently residing in Brooklyn, New York, comes an artist who is versatile in all areas of entertainment. Damion Oakley, aka Lynx Unruly, has been performing and recording for over a decade. As an actor, Lynx wowed audiences with his portrayal of Sammy in the movie “Krosses”, as well as playing himself in the smash movie drama, “Bashment” in 2004.

Musically, his lyrics are humorous and catchy…case in point, the fan favorite “Fire Escape” track, an answer to Kiprich’ “Telephone”. “Fire Escape” spent weeks on the US charts, and this propelled Lynx’ career full throttle.

It’s no accident that Lynx would be involved in the music industry, as music flows through his veins. Being blood relative to dancehall’s Billboard chart topper Mad Cobra, sealed his fate. Entertaining is what this artist knew he had to do. This was his niche and where he belonged.

Lynx says he is “in love with music. I proposed to music and I am waiting for the date to put the ring on it.” He is not just a performer and writer, he is also a producer who produced the “Good Hope” riddim featuring new talents. He also co-produced the “River Bed” riddim which featured prominent members of the dancehall such as, Beenie Man, Mad Cobra, Anthony B, Hawk Eye and others.

Lynx can hardly be considered a dancehall artist only, however, as he delves in other genres, and is presently fine tuning a project which will enable fans to see his prowess as a pop artist as well.

Lynx is also currently working with famed producer Jerome Felix, aka Jerry Dawg, so fans already know that they have a lot to look forward to musically.

At the moment, the Unruly one is promoting his brand new single, “Throw My Heart Away”, which features Maxwell Collins on vocals. The remainder of 2014 and the future, looks bright for this artist who has experience, knowledge and wit. His determination and demeanor ensures his success, and fans can rest assured that what’s to come from Lynx is greater than what has been.

  • The Band ‘JOSEPH’ rocks Movietowne with debut performance

The Band ‘JOSEPH’ rocks Movietowne with debut performance

POS, Trinidad – The Caribbean music landscape received a welcomed addition on July 12th with the unveiling of the multifaceted musical unit known as “JOSEPH”.

The 7 member Caribbean music-fusion band had its premiere performance at the famed Fiesta Plaza, Movietowne, Port-Of-Spain and electrified the capacity crowd with their hard-hitting, catchy, original compositions all penned by bandleader Ian D. Joseph. Much to the patrons’ delight, JOSEPH delivered a diverse set featuring a variety of genres which included Reggae, Rock, Rapso, Funk, Soul, and even a jazzy Steel pan tune.

Music lovers at Fiesta Plaza grooved and swayed as JOSEPH’s lead singer/songwriter/guitarist, Ian Joseph, led the band through 11 of his original compositions.

A man of many talents, Ian has performed professionally as part of the bustling live music scene in the US, Canada and his homeland of Trinidad and Tobago. He honed his skills playing several music styles with various bands at clubs, universities and concert venues, and opened for the likes of Burning Spear, Third World and the legendary Wailers.

Besides being Ian’s last name, he interpreted the quote, “JOSEPH is a fruitful bough…” found on Bob Marley’s ‘Rastaman Vibration’ album, as a call and even a responsibility to be a fruitful, creative contributor through his music. He shared, “JOSEPH also represents a Trinbagonian universality based on Ian’s experience of meeting Trinbagonians of East-Indian, African, Syrian, and Chinese descent who all share this surname. It seems that ‘every creed and race’ has embraced the name, so why not give them a chance to embrace the music”?

Most notably, JOSEPH has varied musical influences ranging from North American and British performers such as Nile Rodgers, Eric Clapton, and Sting to Caribbean musicians which include T&T guitarist Tony Voisin (Charlie’s Roots), Kassav’, and Calypso Icon David Rudder. JOSEPH is currently in the process of recording an album of songs.

One of these songs is the well-received, ‘Lula’ which had everyone buzzing after the show. Ian has chosen ‘Lula’ to be the band’s first single which it will release shortly

JOSEPH, which consists of Ian Joseph (Lead Vocals & Guitars), Francois Harewood (Keyboards), Reynold Woodroofe (Bass & Backing Vocals), Roger Salloum (Drums), Shanna and Malene Joseph (Backing Vocals) and special guest artiste, Markita Joseph (Tenor Pan), had the appreciative Fiesta plaza audience leaning on its every note and left them wishing for more. Music fans will get more as the band is booked for numerous gigs throughout this summer around Trinidad.

  • Teflon Goes EDM With New Album

    Teflon

Electronic Dance Music, also known as EDM, is becoming increasingly popular among partygoers globally and has even found its way onto the shores of Jamaica. Despite Reggae and Dancehall being the dominant music of choice on the island; local socialites have been embracing the electronic genre especially at popular night spots and via programming offered by a number of radio jocks on various stations.

With this ongoing trend Reggae singer Teflon who is slated to release his sophomore album shortly refuses to be left out of the movement. The Rastafarian crooner who made a name for himself singing conscious ballads says he is all about taking his music to that next level.

“EDM is the new movement globally that is what the people are into, so if I can combine Reggae with Electronic Dance Music and get the message out why not do it. I am about spreading positive messages of righteousness and if this is a channel to assist in the process then I will explore that possibility.”

Teflon says his album titled ‘Next Dimension’ will not be the typical Reggae compilation that everyone’s expecting but will comprise of EDM among other genres all aimed at showcasing his growth and other dimensions as an artiste. He also echoed similar sentiments in a recent interview with Israeli publication Kaboom1.

“The musical environment in Jamaica is extremely competitive, where the strong survive and the weak fades. As an artiste I cannot be complacent if I want to remain relevant and conquer this business. So the onus is on every artiste to make a concerted effort to put in that extra effort where needed.”

The benevolent crooner explains that music has no boundaries and should not be confined in a box, he says evolution is necessary if we intend to make positive strides, but remained steadfast that despite the fusion he will stay true to his principle of only making ‘good music’ regardless of the injection of new genres.

Currently, promoting the singles ‘I’m Sure’ and the collaborative effort ‘Same Struggle’ featuring Capleton, The ‘Yard A Love’ recording artiste and his management are working assiduously to raise his profile ahead of the album release. The album will be distributed by U.S based company New Millionaire Entertainment (NME). The deal sees them being the exclusive agent handling both digital and physical distribution for Teflon along with his marketing throughout the world for downloadable, mobile and video contents. The dissemination will be done in conjunction with Universal Records.

    Air Supply

With over 100 million albums sold worldwide, Australian soft-rock pop legends Air Supply have scored eight Top 10 Billboard hits in the United States, including anthems like “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All,” “Good Bye,” “Its Never Too Late” and “Lost In Love,” which was named “Song Of The Year” in 1980. The group mesmerized music fans at the 2011 Jamaica Jazz & Blues festival and their upcoming performance at Groovin In The Park will be no different. In 2013, Air Supply was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame.

    Ber

Known to many as the “Otis Redding of Reggae,” Beres Hammond has been producing and pouring out his smoky-sweet vocals over every kind of riddim track for almost 40 years. Beres Hammond, who ignited New York City with musical flames when he last appeared on Groovin’ In The Park in 2012, has a track record of hits that is unprecedented in reggae, including “Rockaway,” “In Love With You,” “What One Dance Can Do,” “She Loves Me Now,” “Step Aside,” “Double Trouble” and “Putting Up Resistance.” His latest Grammy-nominated album One Love, One Life (2012, VP Records) peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Top 10 Reggae Album chart and was lauded by Rolling Stone as “one of the best albums of a four-decade-long career.”

    Marcia

Hailed as the only Jamaican female vocalist to have chart-topping success in such a vast range of styles (doo-wop covers, rock steady, roots and funk), Marcia Griffiths’ versatility and willingness to adapt has worked to her advantage. From her international break as one of the I-Threes (Bob Marley’s iconic backing trio) to her chart-topping success with “Electric Boogie” (the 80s hit prompting the Electric Slide dance), the First Lady of Reggae’s accomplishments have commanded royal respect throughout her 40-year plus career. During her set at Groovin In The Park, she will perform alongside original I-Threes’ member Judy Mowatt, veteran singer John Holt and her long-time singing partner Bob Andy. Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt were recently honored with the “Reggae Ambassador’s Award” in New York by VP Records and Groovin Inc.

    Chronix

The 21-year-old roots vocalist Chronixx is one of hottest new reggae artists on the circuit. He recently dropped his new project Dread & Terrible, which was written entirely by himself. The conscious singer-songwriter has been building a name for himself with energetic live performances and raves reviews from media and industry alike. In a recent Billboard interview, Island Records’ founder Chris Blackwell said Chronixx’s music is “completely fresh, uplifting and very pure.” Major Lazer selector Walshy Fire added that “the world will recognize him as one of reggae’s greatest artists.” He already has an impressive catalogue of smash hits – including “Behind Curtain,” “Tell Mi Now,” “Here Comes Trouble,” “African Heritage” and his patriotic island anthem “Smile Jamaica” that has placed him on reggae’s frontline.
