Piton Soca Starz Takes a Break
With the electrifying conclusion of the first half of preliminary rounds for the 4th annual Piton Soca Starz, the popular event has taken a break for this year’s Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival. Piton Soca Starz 2013 will resume however, on Friday May 17, and will give even more aspiring soca artistes chances to qualify with the possibility of walking away with the title, cash and prizes.
The final event of the first set of preliminary rounds took place on Saturday April 27 in Dennery during the Dennery fish fiesta, which drew massive crowd support. Eight participants, some taking to the stage for the first time, contested for a place at the semi-finals. The event also featured two past finalists from Micoud; Blick Productions and General Bakes, who were very well received. On Friday April 26 another street party, this time Gros Islet, was invaded by Piton Soca Starz with a mix of fresh new talent as well as a few past participants taking to the stage and entertaining the audience.
The 2013 edition of Piton Soca Starz kicked off on Friday April 12 with a street jam on Jeremie Street where eight newcomers did battle during the competition, for their place in the semi-final. On April 19 it was then on to Anchors Bar in Piaye, another Piton Soca Starz hot spot, which saw newcomers like Zeena gracing the stage as well as Soca Bandit out of Laborie. In the town of Soufriere the night of Wednesday April 24 seemed more like a weekend, when a huge and energized crowd (which spilled out onto the streets) turned out at the Big Yard for one of the most exciting events yet. Performers like Murf Dog and Dwayne scored big with the audience there.
This year, Piton Soca Starz is being hosted by Q-pid and has so far featured guest performances by Mongstar, Soca Psycho, Ambi, J Budz and Sergia. The event is also being aired on Choice TV (LIME Ch. 39 Karib Cable Ch. 50) Thursdays at 9:30 PM with a repeat on Sundays at 7 PM.
Piton Soca Starz returns Friday May 17 at Richards Bar in Augier, Saturday May 18, Raymond’s Dennery Valley, Wednesday May 29th JJ’s Back in time Marigot and Friday May 31, Caribbean Cocktails Castries.
Two semi-final rounds will be held in June, the first on Friday June 7, WLBL car park Vieux fort and the second, Friday June 14 Piton Party in De Yard, CSA grounds Sans Souci.
The grand finals of Piton Soca Starz 2013 will be held on Saturday June 29, and will feature the band DYP, past Piton Soca Starz winners and performers and an international soca act that will mentor contestants to heighten their level of professionalism in the business.
