  • Trinidad and Tobago’s Anglican Church Preserve the Legacy of Hayes Court

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – Friday January 10, 2014, marked the launch of the Hayes Court Restoration Project and Fund at a private cocktail reception held on the restoration site. The Anglican Bishop of Trinidad and Tobago, the Rt. Reverend Claude Berkley, convened the Hayes Court Restoration Committee with a mandate to refurbish the dilapidated and unoccupied residence of the Bishop. With an overarching vision to preserve a monumental part of the twin-island state’s cultural and religious history, this launch signalled the beginning of on-going efforts to attract public and private sector funding to raise the TT $24.1M needed to successfully execute the restoration.

The evening’s proceedings opened with an engaging piece of Caribbean contemporary movement by the Trinidad and Tobago-based dance company, Continuum Dance Project. The retired Bishop, the Rt. Reverend Rawle Douglin, offered the blessing followed by a sobering speech by Bishop Berkley who emphasized the significance of preserving Hayes Court as a heritage site. The Bishop further went on to highlight some of the church’s strategic plans to diversify the functionality of the space to include heritage activities such as tours and the establishment of a mini-museum. Guests were then treated to a Rest-Oration oratory by traditional mas character and master Pierrot Grenade, Felix Edinborough, who used word play to issue a call to take action thereby ending the rhetoric about restoration. The programme culminated with tours of the termite-ridden and deteriorating residence led by members of the Citizens for Conservation during which pledges were accepted.

The Hayes Court Restoration Committee and members of the Anglican clergy and diocesan staff played host to a humble group of specially invited guests including the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, H.E. Arthur Snell, accompanied by his wife; the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Stefan Karl Herbert Schlüter; the Minister of National Diversity and Social Integration, the Honourable Rodger Samuel; CEO and Managing Director of the Trinidad and Tobago Mortgage Finance Company, Ingrid Lashley; CEO and Managing Director – Caribbean of the Pan-American Life Insurance Company of Trinidad and Tobago, Miguel Sierra; Group General Counsel/Corporate Secretary of the Republic Bank, Jacqueline Quamina; architect and President of Citizens for Conservation, Rudylynn De Four-Roberts; curatorial expert and director at Heritage Development Consultants, Claire Broadbridge; and historian and artist, Adrian Camps-Campin.

Hayes Court is one of the Magnificent Seven buildings, which were listed by the Organisation of American States as an historic district on the Register of Monuments of the Greater Caribbean. Standing along the western edge of the Queen’s Park Savannah, Hayes Court is a bastion of cultural heritage and religious history. Originally conceived and traditionally used as the residence of the Anglican bishops of Trinidad and Tobago since 1910, the structure was named after Bishop Thomas Hayes, the second bishop of Trinidad and Tobago. The majestic twentieth century house has received guests including South African Archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Desmond Tutu, as well as the Archbishop of Canterbury and heads of the Anglican Church, Robert Runcie and Donald Coggan.

  • Rikki Jai and Nigel Rojas unleash “Clap Your Hands”

POS, Trinidad – According to several indigenous music fans and local industry insiders Rikki Jai and Nigel Rojas are en route to Chutney Soca supremacy with the release of their Carnival 2014 offering “Clap Your Hands”.

Clap Your Hands was written by Jai and Rojas and produced by Big Rich of the Punkalunks Factory. The success of this track which is being referred to by many as a ‘breath of fresh chutney air’ will see the duo share several stages during the Carnival season which include the semi-finals of the 2014 Chutney Soca Monarch competition.

This collaboration by the 6 time Chutney Soca Monarch King and the Orange Sky front man takes a modern yet non-complicated approach to Chutney Soca with its fun, relatable lyrics, smooth melodies and infectious rhythms. The song is intended to be a ‘feel good’ anthem for the masses and also pays tribute to icons of the genre, past and present.

According to Jai, “This latest track is by far one of the happiest feel good tracks that I have written; the vibes and energy are not only for T&T but for the world to enjoy.

Public outcry against the quality of lyrics in Chutney caused me to examine my own lyrics and that of fellow artistes and I decided that one has to try to please all segments that love and enjoy music. I went back to a time when Chutney was in its embryo stages; a time when groups of ladies would congregate at weddings and functions and sing for guests accompanied by the rhythms of the dholak, lota, 2 spoons, 2 maracas and onlookers clapping their hands”.

Rojas who sings and plays guitar on the track expressed his respect for Rikki Jai’s artistic abilities and his excitement about performing with him on the CSM stage, “I am grateful and humbled for this experience, our performance is going to be extremely memorable, and I am just really stoked about doing this”. Regarding his verses on the track he shared, “As a performer I am always inspired by the kinetic energy that is exchanged between the stage and the audience, in this case I am talking to a dancer in the crowd who has captured my attention and I am telling her how inspired I am by her energy and her clapping.”

Both Rikki and Nigel have been involved with music for decades and draw inspiration from musical luminaries e.g. Sparrow and David Rudder. The duo looks forward to not only competing in the CSM but to spreading the positivity and happiness of this song locally, regionally and globally.

  • Vincy Born Entertainer Looks To Carnival Mecca For Greatest Example- Promises To Observe & Network in 2014

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad – St. Vincent is rumbling with the energy of artistes who are ready to show the world just how impressive their individual style of sweet soca music, truly is. Son of the soil, Cameron is one of these artistes and as the mecca of all carnivals, Trinidad and Tobago’s carnival, comes more and more into focus, the artiste who now resides permanently in the United States, says he wants the people of the Caribbean to know him and gradually become familiar with his music.

Unlike other new kids on the block who’re eager to get into fetes in T&T this season, Cameron understands that he must pay his dues so with no qualms about that, he says he plans on visiting Trinidad in February where all effort will be placed on networking and attending the events that he knows he’ll one day be part and parcel of, as an entertainer.

In 2009, the artiste who credits his mother for her constant motivation, made it official when he released his very first single, “Don’t be Afraid.” The single was produced by Trinidadian producer, The Madarchitect and was a success, according to Cameron. One year later, Cameron released a single he called, “Against The Wall” which also got the attention of DJs and music lovers, giving the artiste added momentum and encouragement in his budding music career.

Since that time, Cameron has released several other tracks, experimenting along the way by fusing soca with techno and pop music in a bid to explore a new sound of sorts. As he explained it, he felt it was important to offer other cultures outside of the Caribbean culture, an opportunity to understand the Soca music that he so loves by fusing it with genres that are already staples of the global music industry.

Last year, Cameron teamed up with Adrian Bailey- the producer of Kevin Little’s smash single, “Turn Me On”. Together they created a track called ‘Encore’ and managed to turn some heads. Subsequent to that, another single called, “Eclipse” raked in some 52,000 plus views on YouTube, assuring the eager entertainer that he was in fact doing something right. Currently, a single called “Body On Body” has Cameron very excited. He says it’s his most recent release and one that is already creating a stir in places such as New York,England,Canada,Africa,Aruba and Anguilla.

With the prospects of further growth on his mind, Cameron says he is ready to conquer new territory and is bent on eventually becoming a household name in T&T- the mecca of Carnival. He is however looking toward earning the respect of music lovers, promising that every release will be a quality release, deserving of their attention.

  • King of Dancehall Beenie Man Collaborates with International Star Orisha Sound on New Single

Los Angeles, CA – Once again proving her star quality, international pop artist Orisha Sound has teamed up with the King of Dancehall, Beenie Man, for the release of their music video “World War III”. The all-star duet joined forces late in 2013 to deliver an unstoppable single that has invaded the iTunes charts and radio airwaves. Topping off the success from the single, the duet collaborated in Jamaica and Los Angeles to create their magical video.

Enlisting the help of some Jamaican dancers, the duo took to the streets of Kingston to give fans an edgy, yet real vision. From dancing in the streets of Jamaica to Orisha Sound rocking her Los Angeles Lakers jersey, both home fronts for Orisha are represented. Orisha describes the making of the video as one big party, from the dancers to the excitement of fans around them; “the experience was more than I could ask for”. The relaxed and pleasant environment of the set directly translated to the energetic and fun attitude of the video. Complimenting her honey-coated vocals, Beenie Man serves up a hot dose of reggae charm. The song opens with an electro twist and progresses when the snares beat out bringing in the booming bass. Matching the diversity of the sound, the lyrics aren’t lost with the sensual insinuations and clever wordplay, which in turn are the factors that make the song so hypnotizing and memorable.

Beenie Man is a Grammy award-winning reggae artist originally born in Jamaica. Since signing to Virgin Records, he has been dubbed the King of Dancehall. Beenie Man’s collaborator on the track, Orisha Sound, grew up on the battlefield of music. She was honing her skills on violin, piano, and vocals while other girls her age were still playing with dolls. By the time she was just nine years of age, Orisha was a seasoned veteran due to her tours of duty that had her playing all across Europe and the United States. Each time on the road exposed her to the many different genres and styles of playing that all found a way into her current modern eclectic sound. “I don’t stay in one place – I move a lot…” Says Orisha, “I enjoy the beat of the streets and the studios of LA, Moscow, Kingston, London, Paris, NY… It’s all about the people and their love, hate, sex, faith, fun and struggle. It’s a ‘F**k the police’ mentality.” The musical rebel knows what she wants and takes it with a musical tour-de-force. Her international lifestyle has helped earn her a deal with DirectTV and PunchTV for her own reality show, Project O, which debuts in 2014.
