  • Jamaican Music Producer, Broadcaster To Be Honored In NYC

Irie Fashion Rave (IFR), the Diaspora’s premier fashion event will this year honor two industry pioneers, broadcaster Ken Williams and music producer Philip Smart. The tribute, which will form part of Irie Jam Radio’s 20th anniversary celebration, will be held at the posh Resort World Casino in Queens, New York on Sunday, April 28 starting at 6pm.

“Ken and Philip have both achieved excellence in their respective careers and today we celebrate their innumerable contributions. We applaud them for their ongoing support of our Jamaican music and culture and look forward to an unforgettable evening with these two icons” Syntyche ‘Syn’ Dawkins VP of Irie Jam Media and co-producer of IFR said.

Smart, a legendary music producer, engineer and arranger has enjoyed a successful career that span nearly five decades. As owner, operator of the successful HC&F Recording Studio in Long Island, NY, he worked with some of the biggest stalwarts in the reggae industry including Shaggy, Barrington Levy, Coco Tea, Sister Carol, Shelly Thunder, Johnny Osbourne, Augustus Pablo and Horace Andy. Among the most popular tracks he has produced are “Go Deh Yaka,” by Monyaka – which reached #14 on the UK charts – “Hot This Year” by DJ Dirtsman, “Rikers Island” by Coco Tea and “None Shall Escape” by Johnny Clarke. During the 1990’s, at the peak of reggae’s explosion in the USA, Smart recorded five albums for Shaggy, including “Hot Shot,” which was certified Diamond in the United States with an estimated 20 million sales worldwide.

Broadcaster Ken Williams, who returned home last year to assume the position of CEO of Hot 102 FM and board member of CVM Television, is a media pioneer who has had a distinguished career in radio and television in the USA. In the 70’s, he served as Program Director at Inner City Broadcasting/WLIB and was responsible for introduced legendary acts like Bob Marley, Toot Hibbert and Jimmy Cliff to the New York radio listeners and for incorporating a Caribbean music format at the station. He later pioneered Caribbean programs on WNWK 105.5FM and later at WVIP 93.5FM where he hosted the popular Ken Williams Show. Ken has also had an eye for beauty and was instrumental in launching the long running Miss Jamaica/USA Beauty Pageant. He was also a successful business entrepreneur, owning and operating New York entertainment landmarks like Club Negril and Carib New York.

Last year IFR honored Sirius Satellite radio Program Director/ radio host Pat McKay and artiste manager Robert Livingston with ‘Lifetime Achievement Awards’ for their outstanding contribution to the entertainment industry, while Jamaican rapper Heavy D and music producer Joel Chin were each honored posthumously for their contribution to the Jamaican music industry. Previously Kingsley Cooper, the man credited with launching the careers of international models Nadine Willis, Jaunel McKenzie, Gaye McDonald, Jeneil Williams and Carla Campbell, was honored.

Dawkins also announced that Yandy Smith of VH1s Love and Hip Hop will be guest hosting and showcasing her jewelry line ‘Everything Girls Love.’ IFR will be hosted by DJ Roy (Irie Jam Radio, New York) and the ‘Fluffy Diva’ Miss Kitty (Jamaica) with music by Dubb Master Chris, Road International, Steelie Bashment and DJ Cali B.

  • Caribbean Songbird Jalena Drops New Single and Video, “1 Night Stand”

Caribbean songbird Jalena makes a splash with the new video for her provocative hit single, “1 Night Stand.” The song was officially released on Jalena’s Bad Reputation album, back in May 2012. It is the third full-length studio effort from this eclectic singer and songwriter from Tortola, British Virgin Islands, who effortlessly blends R&B and pop with reggae undertones, giving fans a taste of her diverse island heritage and fusion sound.

“1 Night Stand” has tongues wagging with its suggestive title, and tackles a subject Jalena felt needed to be addressed. “I wrote this song because it’s a topic that hasn’t really been broached upon from a female perspective,” she reveals. “I can certainly relate to it and it was surprising to see how many other women also share similar experiences. It was a fun song to do.”

The track showcases Jalena’s range and talent, lacing her sultry vocals over an easy-breezy island pop rhythm, which was produced by Platinum Sellers Beats. The “1 Night Stand” video was shot on location in Tortola and is directed by Gabriel A. Stephen, with the song’s writer, Jalena, at the helm of its tantalizing concept. “We wanted to capture the vibe of the song,” Jalena discloses. “I wanted the video to depict this delicate experience from my perspective, so I can hopefully add to an international dialog for ladies everywhere.”

Hitting the musical scene since 2005, Jalena initially started out singing soca music, but has evolved over the years in her artistry, resulting in her reggae, pop and R&B blend. She is influenced by the likes of Shirley Bassey, Diana King, Patra, Pink and Jah Cure, and her music certainly reflects that melting pot and presents the global audience with a unique island-meets-international sound.

“1 Night Stand” is now available on the Bad Reputation album from iTunes and all major digital retailers worldwide. Follow Jalena’s rise to stardom at or Please direct all management and booking inquires to Sebastian Miko at

  • Taj Weekes & Adowa – A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen Video Gallery

With only 2 weeks left until the release of their 4th CD, PARIAH IN TRANSIT, Taj Weekes & Adowa is sharing the last video from their internationally acclaimed album, A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen (AWLSK). As an added treat to their fans, the band celebrates the success of AWLSK with a gallery featuring some video singles from the album. Click through each image and enjoy Taj Weekes & Adowa at work.

This never before seen video, Sunny Innocents was recorded in a late night/early morning recording session.

Shot in St. Lucia, this laid back tune features Taj Weekes, surrounded members of Adowa, friends and family by a cozy campfire on a beautiful beach.

From commemorating the birth of Southern Sudan with Janjaweed, to lamenting the delayed and ineffectual action following Hurricane Katrina in Rain Rain, or asking the question of whatever happened to Peace & Love, Taj Weekes & Adowa solidified their place in music history as leading the renaissance of roots reggae music. In an interview with Reggaeville discussing the album, the band’s influence on reggae music today is summed up as such:

You are truly a griot in that sense: a troubador, singing these songs of freedom, not to sell some sort of agenda but to teach things to people… things that I don’t think a lot of people have actually ever been taught in song. They may have scratched the surface in progressive radio or read a little bit in Mother Jones or thought about these things by watching Rachel Maddow, but you can give it to people on a higher level, an artistic level that is unique in its reggae form and certainly unique in mainstream pop. It’s Bob Dylan. It’s that time in music when people were taking risks. – Reggaeville, 2012

Thank you for supporting the music, exchanging video links on social media, and coming to see the band live. A special thanks to all of the creators/directors of these videos – Digital Alchemy/Sidekick Creative (Janjaweed), Kevin O’Leary (YARFTH), Drew Renaud (Peace & Love, Anthems of Hope), and Monica Hoenig (Sunny Innocents).

Until……let your vibes be high and your message mighty.

  • UK Beats- Trinidad & Tobago Flavor. Brent Anthony Eyes Global Market With Electrified

Another Trinidad voice will soon be penetrating international airwaves. Brent Anthony is not a Soca artiste delivering that traditional islander’s melody. In fact his crossover appeal has caught the attention of producers in the United Kingdom.

Anthony’s latest single, ‘Electrified’ was produced in London by Gregg X and Martin Raymond and he says he really wanted to get that authentic dance music sound so he decided to go to the source. Already, the track has peaked the interest of Right Recordings in the United Kingdom. The company is an independent music label distributed under the Universal Music banner. For Anthony, it’s a step up. He’s been working hard over the years and he’s hoping that this latest development would mean a breakthrough for his music.

The elder brother of Wong and Sean Nebula of T&T’s Nebula868, Brent has been trying to garner the attention of the music industry’s execs locally and overseas- the people who will make his music matter to the world. He’s currently aligned with Boston’s On The Spot Entertainment and even with Electrified having only been recently released, the young vocalist isn’t sparing any chances. He’s already finished up another single called ‘This Pain I Feel’, which was produced by On The Spot Entertainment. That single will be released later on this year.

‘Electrified’ was written by Brent and his brother Wong Nebula while the yet to be released, ‘This Pain I Feel’ was written by Anthony and Saloi Chyn-Vun. Looking at music’s continuous transformation, Brent Anthony says he feels it’s now or never for him. His passion for music’s varying genres, particularly house music, dance and R&B has equipped him with an open mind when it comes to the infusion of collective melodies. “I’ll never be one dimensional. I really believe that music is the only universal language so why should any artiste from any country be boxed into one or two genres? Why shouldn’t music be fused and new sounds created? That’s what life is all about- creating new beginnings,” he said thoughtfully.

At home in Trinidad, Brent Anthony is making the necessary links and marketing his sound internationally- a sound while may seem far from the norm at home, will ultimately be accepted across the seas. He promises to continue the hardwork. He believes that it’s the only way he’ll make the necessary inroads. His encouragement? A simple saying- “the race is not to the swift but to those who endure to the end.”

  • Fast Rising Dancehall/Reggae Artist Touchless

“Success is a journey not a destination” says Fast Rising Dancehall/Reggae Artist Touchless

Born and raised in Jamaica, Brandon Ryan Campbell knew from a young age that he needed to express himself through the arts. Learning to play the trumpet and saxophone in elementary came naturally to him and he reveled in stage performances throughout his school years. Brandon cites Spragga Benz, Bounty Killer, Super Cat, Ninja Man, Shabba Ranks, Tenor Saw, Nicodemus and Bob Marley as some of his musical inspirations and from each of them understood the importance of a message through music, whether political, love or just making one dance to feed the soul. Although music was in his blood, it wasn’t until his move to Toronto, Canada that Brandon took his God given talent more seriously and launched his fast rising career.

Now residing in Canada and taking the stage name of Touchless, he spends countless hours writing music, honing his craft and performing throughout Canada. Touchless knew and understood that he needed the stamp of approval of his native land, after all the music within him was cultivated in the birth place of dancehall and reggae… Jamaica! Touchless did a promotional tour throughout the island, performing on various stage shows and interviews on several radio stations, re introducing himself to music lovers.

As his life motto states “Success is a journey not a destination”, Touchless understands that the satisfaction and rewards he reaps from music must be shared, and that is why he dreams of building a center/home for the homeless children in Jamaican who are living on the streets. “I don’t want to take from music, I want to give through music” he states.
