From the rhythmic bosom of Africa comes a collaboration that is filled with all the warmth of home, melded amidst the undying love of sincere Soca aficionados around the world. In “Possessed”, Machel Montano and Kerwin Du Bois are joined on a spirit-infused harmonic journey alongside South Africa’s triple-time Grammy award winners, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The world famous male choral group have added their distinct and unforgettable vocal tones to such legendary albums as, Grammy winner Paul Simon’s Graceland. This is in addition to their uncountable nominations for Grammys, Emmys and Oscars over the years, and the multiple Drama Desk and SAMA Awards they have won for their consistently enchanting releases. This soothing yet compelling melodic production was done by Kerwin and inspired Machel to fulfill two lifelong dreams. The first being, taking Soca to Africa and secondly working with Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Poignant from start to finish, the track embraces a new frontier for all the artists involved, as it magnificently demonstrates our undeniable musical ties, which exist beyond all barriers of time and space.

    1. Brooklyn Gurls
    2. She Love My Taste
    3. Booty Bounce
    4. Drink And Party
    5. Hold Di Faith

Touted as the media capital and melting pot of the world, New York City also claims home to savvy, sensational dancehall artist Pryme Tyme. Born Daniel Lambert on April 24, 1983 in Clarendon, Jamaica, Pryme Tyme relocated to NYC at age 13, and is a product of the diverse, aggressive and iconic musical culture of Brooklyn, which helps define and distinguish him in today’s music industry.

Growing up within the diversity of NYC, Pryme Tyme was greatly influenced by the different genres of music around him, but his island roots remained intact, and reggae and its sub-genre dancehall became his music of choice. However, his pursuit of a music career was put on hold because of the practicality of his mother, who, because of her struggles in raising three kids as a single parent, encouraged education and hard work. Thus, after high school and the lack of prospects in Brooklyn at the time, Pryme Tyme join the military in 2003.

During his tenure with the US Navy, Pryme Tyme visited many countries and was therefore exposed to many cultures and ethnicities. His tour of duty in Iraq during the war brought with it depression and feelings of despair for Pryme Tyme and his fellow officers. It was during this time that he enlisted his musical talents to bring joy to those around him, and his humorous and playful lyrics created a light-hearted atmosphere during the surreal events of war. Pryme Tyme’s music provided exactly the break from reality that was needed.

Following his service in the military, Pryme Tyme’s interest in a music career became more heightened in 2008, when he performed a song he wrote entitled “Gal Want Me,” for family and friends. Their cheers and motivation gave Pryme Tyme all the confidence he needed to forge ahead. He then entered talent showcases in and around NYC, where he performed songs such as “Drink And Party,” “Brooklyn Gurls” and “Money Tree,” which gained a lot of radio play across the Caribbean, especially in Jamaica and Guyana.

Pryme Tyme currently resides in Brooklyn and continues on his musical quest as a dynamic performer and provocative lyricist. He is signed to New York-based Kaieteur Records and is managed by its owner, Michael Morian. In December 2011, he released his first mixtape with renowned mixtape king, Father Bentley International. When Pryme Tyme is not busy in the recording studio, you can find him attending classes at the College of New Rochelle, where he is majoring in Liberal Arts.

Blazing into 2013 with the release of his debut EP, Fresh Out The Dirt, Pryme Tyme hits the pavement hard with a sizzling single to heat up the winter with “She Love My Taste.” The five-track EP will be available on all major digital outlets worldwide in January 2013. With his ambitious and determined foray into dancehall music, Pryme Tyme is sure to capture the attention of music fans and critics alike, across the globe.

In this, their first ever Power riddim for Trinidad and Tobago, they have layered that infamous driving rhythmic bass line alongside the tantalizing marching drum heard at every inter-collegiate football match throughout our islands, with the vivacity of our Carnival to produce a sound that needed four true Soca strikers to flawlessly execute this musical game plan.

First on the field, perfectly representing the irrepressible scandal within us all is the divine diva Nadia Batson with “Doh Tell Mi”.

The song “Represent” (the remix) combines all the necessary elements of Soca with a conscious message. The film was made entirely in Trinidad and Tobago, starring an all-local cast. Blue Cinamon has solid roots in the film/music video industry as an innovative, one-stop-shop company, which combines marketing, art direction, and their wealth of experience in the US music industry. The short film highlights two children Dirk and Chicken, characters inspired from the upcoming film “God Loves The Fighter”. In the story, Dirk and Chicken embark on a mini-adventure through Port of Spain, the mission – to hand out flyers for the neighborhood boss-man, Izaman. They must hand out all the flyers or else they will not get paid. This project is the first of its kind for Trinidad and Tobago. • MasSicker aka King Mas Starts 2013 with ‘One Wish’ Coming True!

For Boston’s MasSicker aka King Mas, 2013 has begun with his album, One Wish coming true as fans of Reggae and Dancehall from around the globe have rated the album as one of the best independent releases for 2012. This energy has carried through to 2013 as album sales continue to do well on iTunes and all digital retailers online.

The album, produced on the Viral Sounds Entertainment imprint, is an authentic expression of King Mas’s musicianship, production standard and willingness to intertwine good musical composition with lyrics that provoke thought. An example of this standard is found in the song “Fade Away.”

The song is a rebuild of the classic Unchained Riddim originally produced by Studio One. Using its familiarity as a foundation, King Mas unites and strengthens the people when he sing-jays “number one we don’t play number two / all dem ah try dem can stop dih Warriors from go through / dis dih natty rebel and yuh ah go get slew / many are called but the chosen are few (repeat) / because jah know we keep stepping up higher / blazin up dih fyah / fih dih yute ah revolute ah spark it like ah live wire / Babylon time ah expire.…”

One of the places Mas has made an impact musically is England. Gav Pauze of Pauze Radio notes that MasSicker is an “unforgettable name that must not be overlooked.” The famed DJ also goes on to say that “very few other artists match MasSicker’s vocal skills and musical abilities.” Fans agree!

  • Sean Paul’s Tell All Book “Irie Jamboree”

Jamaican born international dancehall star Sean Paul has been in the news recently for a US$80 million lawsuit that was filed in New York’s Manhattan Supreme Court by Susanne Persson, who claims to be Sean Paul’s ex-girlfriend. Among the documents Persson – a Swedish makeup artist and hairstylist – reportedly filed in the lawsuit is a self-written book titled ‘Irie Jamboree’ that promises to expose ‘The Truth about Sean Paul’s Cocaine Dealings, Lies, Murders and Erection Problems.’

Since the Sean Paul story broke, our office in Queens, NY have been bombarded with calls from radio listeners, concerned citizens and friends of Irie Jam radio and Irie Jamboree inquiring about our involvement in the lawsuit.

For the record, Irie Jam Media, co producers of Irie Jamboree, North America’s premier music festival would like to categorically state that we have no legal – implied or perceived – connection with the case. In fact we are flabbergasted and outraged as to the use of Irie Jamboree by Persson as the name of her tell all book, since Irie Jamboree is a registered trade name which we have used as the legal name of our festival since the inaugural concert was staged in 2003.

We have now engaged the services of an attorney to determine what legal course if any we need to immediately take to protect our integrity and our brand. We will aggressively fight to legally protect our brand and any damage that may result by the use of the name Irie Jamboree by Persson.

It is a fact that Irie Jam radio and by extension Irie Jamboree has had a great working relationship over the years with Sean Paul, his PR company Headline Entertainment and his management team which continues to this day. We will not support any effort to tarnish his wholesome image and good standing in the music industry.

  • Etana Envisions A ‘Better Tomorrow’ In 2013

Miami-based singer-songwriter Etana will reveal arguably her fiercest, most thought-provoking material to date on February 26, 2013. Recorded at Kingston’s legendary Tuff Gong Studios, Etana’s third studio album Better Tomorrow (VP Records) is a true testament to her evolved sound.

With a fresh perspective and baby daughter Nyla born in November 2012, Etana offers newfound clarity on Better Tomorrow. Her powerful songwriting and evocative vocals ride effortlessly over soulful reggae melodies on this 14-track collection produced primarily by Jamaica’s own Shane C. Brown of Jukeboxx Recordings. Described as
“reggae’s Jill Scott” (NPR) or “reminiscent of India.Arie” (Essence), Etana is “moving ahead from struggles of yesterday on a musical journey that uplifts the mind, body and the raw soul,” as she eloquently explains on Better Tomorrow’s intro “Spoken Soul.”

Etana’s indomitable spirit uplifts and inspires generations both old and new. Songs like “Queen,” ignite strength and empowerment, while “Till You Get Old (Life’s Gift)” is an awe-inspiring tale of motherhood and unconditional love (produced by Stanley “Rellee” Hayden). Her unabashed romanticism shines on the r&b tinged “4 Play 2 Love (Start Over) and on the rhythmic sway of the album’s contagious first single “Reggae.” She combats hopelessness on “Whole New World,” “All I Need” and “Better Tomorrow.” The latter spine-chilling title track addresses the atrocities of children in poverty-stricken communities while instilling optimism for brighter days.

Better Tomorrow expands upon her recent digital-only EP Reggae and 2011 sophomore album Free Expressions, which won praise for the being “a rarity: music that sermonizes, yet still sweetly serenades,” according to These releases also follow her 2008 critically acclaimed debut The Strong One, which featured massive hits “Warrior Love,” “Roots” “I Am Not Afraid,” “Blessing” ft. Alborosie and “Wrong Address” that topped reggae charts in The Caribbean, England and United States. raved that her “poetic consciousness amid soul-stirring grooves rivals that of gifted neo-soulsters.” Pitchfork chose her debut album as their dancehall pick of the month and gushed about her “fulsome and soulful voicings” and “syrupy love songs.” Vibe magazine claimed she had already “established herself as a formidable performer and songwriter whose music and reputation precedes her.” During this period, Etana was nominated for Best New Reggae Artist at MOBO Awards and awarded Best Female Vocalist at both the Excellence in Music & Entertainment (EME) Awards and IRIE FM Radio Awards as well as the Best Solo Female Reggae Vocalist at the 1st annual Reggae Academy Awards.

Taking full advantage of this moment, Callaloo Mas Band has confirmed recent speculations of a collaboration with Toronto’s newest carnival brand, Carnival Angelz Inc.

Who is Carnival Angelz? A subsidiary of D’Bandit Enterprises, Carnival Angelz represents years of international experience in Caribbean entertainment. Under the leadership of Dwayne (D’Bandit) Pitt, Carnival Angelz is proving to be the new era of Toronto Mas.

Determined to shed Toronto Carnival of its status quo state and usher in a season of ‘Rebirth’, Marlon Singh (Callaloo Band Owner) shares – “It’s not enough to coast on our past success; there’s room in Toronto to broaden creative possibilities… We’ve recognized our limitations and in order to continue building Toronto’s Mas Culture, we’re expanding our family to include Carnival Angelz.”

For nearly a decade members of the newly formed, Carnival Angelz have been at the forefront of many creative masquerade ventures. Among these initiatives, is the influential role played in branding the popular, Carnival Nationz. Dwayne’s team has presented many stunning costumes during his span with the multiple ‘Band of The Year’ winning organization – the most impressive being large elegant ‘Angel Wings’ inspired by Victoria’s Secrets, Angels. After playing a major role in securing consecutive ‘Band of the Year’ titles in the last two years (2011 + 2012), Carnival Anglez has jumped the Carnival Nationz ship both satisfied and victorious.

Echoing, Marlon Singh’s sentiments on present limitations and creative possibilities, Dwayne Pitt shares, “Carnival Angelz is a brand built on years of trial and error. Just as we acknowledge our shortfalls, we continue to challenge our formula for success.” When asked, what masqueraders can expect from Callaloo this year, Mr. Pitt eagerly offers – Toronto’s first eco-friendly paperless billing system, modern costumes designed by Designing Darryl, as well as the creative expertise of international (King and Queen) designer, Curtis Eustace (10-Time Trinidad and Tobago King of The Bands).

As the official brand behind Callaloo Mas, the Carnival Angelz creative team will lead the production of Callaloo’s 2013 Toronto Carnival presentation, ‘Rebirth’.

  • Haiti Readies for 2013 Tourism Push

Haiti Tourism Minister Stephanie Villedrouin has unveiled a series of priority projects on which her ministry plans to work in 2013.
Highlighting the list are potential agreements with Delta, Air France and Air Transat for the promotion of tourism packages. In fact, Canada’s Transat, has already announced plans to offer vacation packages to Haiti.
Haiti will also be promoting the country as a destination at tourism fairs in New York, Montreal, Guadeloupe and the Dominican Republic, according to Villedrouin. (Guadeloupe, along with Martinique, has been of particular interest to the Ministry as fellow Francophone islands; late in 2012, the country brought over a group of travel agents from Guadeloupe in a bid to bring more business from the Frenchdepartments.)

This year, the Ministry plans to open a tourism training institute in Les Cayes.

The country additionally will continue work on airport construction in Les Cayes and Ile a Vache. Haiti has high hopes for the tourism potential of Ile a Vache, Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe told Caribbean Journal in an interview last month.
The country plans to open a “professional cuisine laboratory” with a restaurant component in Port-au-Prince. That’s part of a push by the Ministry to promote Haiti’s cuisine; the latest manifestation was the launch of a series of videos focusing on Haiti’s gastronomy by world-renowned Chef Jose Andres, who will be returning to Haiti for more filming work this year.

Villedrouin said Haiti planned to implement a “tourist police” as well, ostensibly to protect some of the country’s more popular tourism areas.

Early in 2013, the Best Western Haiti is slated to open, which will add another 600 new rooms to the country’s hotel stock, following the debut last month of the five-star Royal Oasis in Petionville, a hotel managed by Spanish firm Occidental.

Last year, the focus was first to start rebranding Haiti’s tourism image, Villedrouin toldCaribbean Journal.

The plan was to reshape Haiti in the minds of foreign visitors — and slowly begin to return to the vacation destination Haiti was decades ago.
That led to everything from a billboard on I-95 in Miami promoting Haiti, to a new logo and ad campaign: “Experience It.”

Now, the challenge is for Haiti to turn start turning the new campaign into more visitors, particularly in light of a newly-issued travel warning from the US State Department.

“The task is daunting and we recognize the magnitude of the challenges,” Villedrouin said in a statement. “However, we believe that the dawn of prosperity and stability begins to shine on the face of this country we cherish and love so much.”

  • Fire Fete To See Rejuvenation in 2013- ‘Larger Than Life’ Show Awaits Patrons

Next weekend, some of the country’s biggest soca acts will converge at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain for one of the most anticipated events in Carnival each year. Fire Fete 2013 will see the rejuvenation of an event that has stood the test of time- this as event organisers prepare to ensure patrons truly enjoy the feting experience. One of the big changes being made is the custom of solo artistes performing to tracks. “All artistes will be backed by a live band,” said an organizer.

Vincent and the Soca Unit will provide backup to the cast of solo entertainers which include, Lyrikal, Drupatee, Jahmoun, Devon Matthews, 5 Star Akil, Iwer George and Denise Belfon. This bit of information has already peaked the interest of fete lovers, many of whom have complained about the former practice, over the years. “We know this is going to raise the fete experience ten times fold. People enjoy a live band sound and we really want to deliver that feeling to them,” said the spokesperson.

Fire Fete has consistently dished out the most enjoyed acts of the season, annually. Tickets for the event this year started selling at the very affordable cost of $100, however an increase was imminent as the bulk of those tickets were sold out by Friday, January 4, according to reports.

BunjiGarlin, Fay-Ann Lyons and their Asylum band will headline Fire Fete 2013. The band has delivered a number of hits that have been lapped up by the population at large. From Bunji’sDifferentology, Touchless and Only Woman to Fay-Ann’s Crossover, We Doing This Awah, Stage Open, Formula and Rum, which she recorded collaboratively with Tobago’s Fya Empress, the Asylum stage show is expectedto be something of a spectacle of carnival enjoyment. Patrons are being assured of a well-secured arena at the Queen’s Park Savannah on January 12 and promoters are pleading for the designation of drivers on the night of the event. “We can’t emphasise the importance of this. We don’t want any road incidents following Fire Fete- the first major carnival fete for the season, really. We want patrons to be smart- that’s what it all comes down to,” said the spokesperson.

With gates set to open at 9pm next week Saturday, showtime will be at 11pm. Acts for the night are plenty and each one has something massive to deliver. Nadia Batson’s Manager and Shangri-La as well as Blaxxx’sNo Getaway, will likely cause a stir on show night

Denise ‘Saucy Wow’ Belfon is making it known that should she walk away victorious at the February 8th staging of the International Soca Monarch competition, she will be giving back in a big way, to the people who have supported her over the years- her fans. The soca songstress, known for her attractive dancing prowess on stage, released a power soca single on Wednesday- a track called, ‘Taking Everything’ and this,Belfon says, she is bent on doing.

In 2013, Belfon celebrates 21 years in the soca music industry. “2013 is my year. I’m taking the groovy at the Soca Monarch and now I’m saying that I’m coming to try to take home the Power Soca Monarch too,” said a confident Belfon. She said she is confident that she will be up there in the top three by the end of the competition on Carnival Saturday morning. Belfon has never before made it to the finals of both legs of the competition but she says she will be doing just what she feels she needs to, in the coming weeks, to ensure that she does, in 2013. “This is the first time in years since I’ve been recording and doing songs that I am saying that I am confident that I’ll make it to the finals in both the Power and Groovy- and I really and truly mean it. Sometimes we just say it for the hype but this year, for me, it’s more than just hype.”

Saucy who has described the onset of the 2013 season as ‘madness’ says she is loving every moment of it so far and admitted to having already secured bookings for a number of major events, including Fire Fete next Saturday, WASA Fete and the brand new Prison’s Soca For Life event on January 26th. “The whole factor this year is the fact that the public missed me last year and now this year, the thing start. I’ve done my homework- I’ve watched, analyzed and this year it’s all about the people,” she said.

On the issue of her assurance to her supporters should she walk away the big winner of the competition on Fantastic Friday, Denise said, “If I win a lump sum of money, I don’t see the problem with putting on a grand event for the people- a free event.”
Belfon teamed up with Stadic Studios for her latest contribution and the track, ‘Taking Everything’ was written collaboratively by Belfon, Kevin KC’ Charles and Ian ‘Flojo’ Corbin.

In Tropicalfete quest to showcase and promote Caribbean culture to the World, Tropicalfete presented its annual Top 100 International Caribbean songs for 2012 at Negril Village Lounge in New York City last Thursday. “Tropicalfete’s Top 100 Song Countdown is the only chart that brings together the variety of cultures, languages and rhythms emanating from the Caribbean. From platinum selling hit makers like Rihanna, Sean Paul and Pit Bull to Haitian compa bands, carnival soca anthems or dancehall boomshots, these 100 songs reflect the soundtrack of life across the Caribbean and the influence of the region’s sounds on the musical mainstream.” said journalist Patricia Meschino

The selectors for the night Msz Trini, Shadow Storm, & Power Book played the top songs for the year under the guidance of Keran Deterville the host. Owen and Ardie both had noteworthy performances. 7IGHQ the Band did an incredible job entertaining the audience with songs such as Mr. Fete, Bruk It Down, Cheaters Prayer, Bachannalist to name a few. According to lead vocalist of 7IGHQ The Band, Julius D Intelligent it was a great feeling when he came to the end of his performance and the crowd did not want him to stop singing. The band’s 30 minute set was extended for an extra 20 minutes. One more, two more, encore were some of the things the dancers on the dance floor were chanting.

This years number one (1) song was Mr Fete by the dynamic, high-energy singer, song-writer and producer, Machel Montano of Trinidad and Tobago. Montano has a recod six (6) tunes on the chart. The ever consistent Montano who has performed to sold out concerts in Madison Square Garden, has a musical career that spans over thirty (30) years and has collaborated with the likes of the Mighty Sparrow, Destra, Beenie Man, Pit Bull, Red Rat, G-Unit, Burning Flames, Walker Homung, Calypso Rose, Wyclef Jean and Busta Rhymes who are considered as some of the best in the entertainment/musical industry. This year, Montano is the triple-crown winner in his native country, where he is the Road-march, Power Soca and Groovy Soca Monarch. He also won the International Power Soca title earlier this year with Pump Yuh Flag, that was also the tune that won him the Road-march crown for Trinidad and Tobago carnival 2012. To crown off his achievements for the year, Montano received first-round ballot consideration for a Grammy nomination in the 55th Annual Grammy Awards with his 2012 album, “Double M.”

Tropicalfete congratulates all the artist who secured a spot in the Top 100 International Caribbean Songs. However, the Tropicalfete crew congratulates Mr. Machel Montano for claiming 6 spots on the Top 100 chart and wishes him all the best on his achievements thus far and good luck on his musical journey.
