Modern Contemporary Dance Company Brings Alumni, Seasoned And Apprentice Dancers To The Stage To Celebrate 30 Years Of Dance
Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago… This year the Noble Douglas Dance Company Inc. (NDDCI) will begin the celebration of its 30th anniversary with the presentation of the dance season, TEETH. TEETH marks the beginning of a fourth decade of dance for the NDDCI. Four generations of dancers have cut their teeth and bitten into the dance world in this iconic company, which is an integral part of the legacy of dance pioneer and choreographer, Noble Douglas. The production opens on Saturday October 18, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. and continues on Sunday October 19, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. at Queen’s Hall.
For this momentous season, some of the company’s alumni, Charlene Harris, Charlene Rollock, Kevin Jack, Sherid Mason and Sunil, will return to the stage to perform alongside seasoned members and apprentices. Douglas, the company’s founder and artistic director, reflected on the current dance season, “Audiences will see more than dancers dancing as we engage the process of dancers changing. For the first time, the company’s members range in age from 16 to 40+ where apprentices will share the stage with their teachers. That’s so profound. Particularly in a society where generations refuse to connect and build with one another.”
The engaging programme of primarily new works by Douglas, Dave Williams, Arlene Frank and Penelope Kalloo will also include one remounted piece, Manifestation, choreographed by UK-based, Christel De Souza. Williams, who also gave the show its name, was inspired to create a three-part retrospective performance piece entitled Older More with the 40+ retired alumni dancers in mind. At the recent COCO Dance Festival 2014, audiences were first introduced to Williams’ latest provocative choreography where an excerpt from Older More, Only vanity sees us, was staged. NDDCI’s associate artistic director, Harris, who is also a recipient of the COCO 2014 Trailblazer Award shared, “The energy is amazing, almost nostalgic in the studio when we get together to rehearse. It feels like old times. I am looking forward to feeling and sharing that energy with them once again on stage.”
