ABOUT THIS PROJECT
This year’s edition of globalFEST, the annual world music showcase and all-night party includes three U.S. debuts, as well as several fresh programs and approaches from a bevy of respected global performers.

-BélO: Haiti’s acoustic innovator and social activist channels his home’s deep and diverse Afro-Caribbean roots with catchy, reggae-inflected songs.

– Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino: Southern Italy’s hottest band revitalizes the ancient ritual pizzica tarantata, said to cure the deadly spider’s bite with frenzied trance dances.

– Debo Band: Boston-based crew reinvents the Golden Age of Ethiopian and East African funk and jazz.

– Diogo Nogueira: Brazil’s red-hot samba (and television) star adds a contemporary twist to the beloved rhythms of Rio.

– M.A.K.U. Sound System: Queens, NY-based Afro-Colombian underground band’s roaring guitars, bold brass, and hard-hitting Latin beats and vocals bring down the house.

– Mayra Andrade: Golden-voiced Cape Verde-born singer brings a Parisian and Brazilian flair to her island roots with a new acoustic trio.

– The Silk Road Ensemble: An international collective of virtuoso musicians from around the globe, this ensemble carries on the cross-cultural legacy of founder and artistic director Yo-Yo Ma, drawing inspiration from the historical Silk Road and contemporary musical crossroads.

– SMOD (U.S. Debut): Malian folk rappers, featuring the son of Amadou and Mariam, work serious lyrical flow to create Afro-Rap, wrapped in Manu Chao’s signature globe-trotting production.

– The Gloaming (U.S. Debut): Irish and American roots supergroup (Martin Hayes, Dennis Cahill, Iarla Ó Lionaird, and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh with NY’s indie pianist Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman), marries edgy but harmonious, sparse yet beautiful elements to age-old and new tunes.

– Wang Li (U.S. Debut): France-based Chinese jaw harp master-improviser creates wildly unexpected and deeply meditative melodies, discovering the infinite nuances that breath, tongue, and throat can make.

– Ilhan Ersahin’s Wonderland: Featuring Turkish virtuoso clarinetist Hüsnü Şenlendirici and East Village nu-jazz-world-dub club Nublu’s mover-and-shaker, multi-instrumentalist Ilhan Ersahin, Wonderland’s global music artfully unites Turkish, Kurdish, Gypsy and Armenian grooves into soulful delights.

– Yemen Blues: Yemeni-Israeli electrifying singer and his global band make Mediterranean sounds rock and soar.
Once again, on behalf of all of us at globalFEST, thanks for your contribution, and look forward to seeing you on January 8 at Webster Hall.

Dear Friends!
Thank you for checking out our kickstarter page. Once again, we turn to you to help provide globalFEST with additional funding needed to continue our ambitious vision of encouraging the ongoing expansion of global music’s presence on North American stages. We hope that you will be able to support us in our 9th year, as we present a line-up sure to be filled with new musical revelations from across the planet.

While production costs continue to rise, your support allows us to keep the ticket price flat for the 9th consecutive year. If we exceed our fundraising goal by a substantial margin, we’ll also be able to invest more money into the newly announced globalFEST Touring Fund (gFTF), which helps previous globalFEST performers to reach new markets across the United States, further stimulating the national impact of the festival.

At globalFEST 2011, our friends at NPR documented a minute of each set for your viewing pleasure. Check out last year’s stand-out musicians here! The line-up for globalFEST 2012 will be announced shortly.
“Last year, I was a kid in a candy store; this year, we’re all in for a treat, so spread the word.”
-NPR’s All Songs Considered

“Some of the bands could have melted the ice on the nearby streets.”
-The Wall Street Journal

“The annual globalFEST is something like a whirlwind tour captained by a cosmopolitan disc jockey, hopping from Guadeloupe to Transylvania, Senegal to the Louisiana bayou, Paris to Siberia.”
-The New York Times

globalFEST was started in 2003 with the goal of expanding the knowledge and appreciation of music from around the world) and increasing opportunities for international and domestic world and roots music artists to connect with US audiences during increasingly xenophobic post 9-11 times and the beginning of the Iraq War. This one-night, 3-stage festival has become a bright spot for music lovers in the dark days of early January and is the premier event for artists from around the world to expand their touring opportunities at North American performing arts centers, festivals and nightclubs. globalFEST has helped propel artists such as Antibalas, Balkan Beat Box, Chamber Music: Ballake Sissoko & Vincent Segal, Kailash Kher,La Excelencia, Mariza, Pistolera, RAM, Red Baraat and dozens of others to the national stage.

You may not be aware that globalFEST is a non-profit venture which is produced on a volunteer basis by Bill Bragin (of Acidophilus: Live and Active Cultures),Isabel Soffer (of Live Sounds) and Shanta Thake (of Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater.) All box office revenue is used to cover the extensive production and marketing expenses of this ambitious event. As those expenses continue to rise, it’s become necessary to supplement the revenue with contributions to help defray costs without having to increase ticket prices, which we’ve maintained at one low price for 9 years running.

We hope that through your support we will be able to enjoy another successful year and keep our one low ticket price policy.

The 9th annual globalFEST will be held on January 8, 2012 at Webster Hall. For more information, line-up announcements, and tickets, see www.globalfest.org or call …
