Tropicalfete to Host Book Launch and Live Soca Conversation Celebrating Trinidad and Tobago’s 64th Anniversary of Independence
Dr. Rudolph Ottley will discuss his latest book, The Evolution of Sokah: The Lord Shorty Testimony, at a free cultural event in Brooklyn
BROOKLYN, NY — August 2026 — Tropicalfete, Inc. will commemorate Trinidad and Tobago’s 64th Anniversary of Independence with a special book launch and live conversation exploring the history, development and cultural significance of soca music. The event will be held on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at the Tropicalfete Cultural Landmark, located at 850 New York Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11203.
The evening will feature author and cultural researcher Dr. Rudolph Ottley, who will discuss his latest publication, The Evolution of Sokah: The Lord Shorty Testimony. The book examines the origins and evolution of sokah—now widely known as soca—and documents the pioneering contribution of the late Trinidadian musician and innovator Lord Shorty, who later became known as Ras Shorty I.
Through this timely cultural conversation, attendees will gain greater insight into the creation of soca, its development as a distinct Caribbean musical form and its enduring influence throughout the Caribbean and its diaspora. The event will also honour Trinidad and Tobago’s rich cultural legacy as the nation celebrates 64 years of independence.
The programme will be hosted by Keran Deterville, with the featured conversation moderated by Patricia Meschino. Guests will have an opportunity to participate in the discussion while celebrating the history, artistry and cultural identity embodied in soca music.
