Marcia Griffiths for 2014 'Groovin in The Park' festival in New York City
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Marcia Griffiths kicked off her year-long golden anniversary celebration earlier this year on the opening night of Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, and is now booked for Groovin In The Park festival in New York City.
“After weeks of negotiations, a deal was reached for the reggae queen to join Chronixx and other soon-to-be-announced acts at the festival …” a press release from The PR Agency said on Thursday.
“We are truly honoured to have a reggae legend of the stature of Marcia Griffiths perform at Groovin in the Park 2014,” Christopher Roberts, CEO of Groovin Inc, said. “This is her 50th anniversary in the music industry and she will be going all out to entertain fans and sweep them away with musical treasures.”
The release said her upcoming performance is billed ‘Marcia Griffiths and Friends’ in NYC and will feature original I-Threes member Judy Mowatt, veteran singer John Holt and a reunion with her long-time singing partner Bob Andy.
Griffiths gained international recognition with Bob Andy in 1970 with their cover of Nina Simone’s ‘Young, Gifted and Black’, which sold half million copies in the UK and Europe. She later toured the world with Bob Marley and the Wailers as a member of the I-Threes before hitting the Billboard chart as a solo act with her monster hit ‘Electric Boogie’. Other hits from the Griffiths include ‘Feel like Jumping’, ‘Melody Life’, and ‘Truly’.
