Early Start for Piton Soca Starz 2013
A new season of Piton Soca Starz will be unleashed on April 12, 2013 here in Saint Lucia. Now in its fourth year the annual Soca competition organized by WLBL’s Piton Beer, for up and coming Soca artistes, has become one of the major events on the calendar of activities for Saint Lucia’s Carnival, drawing large crowds at various venues all over the island. The event, which is recorded for re-broadcast each week, has also garnered an enormous fan base of television viewers following from the comfort of their homes or at their favourite bars and restaurants when it is being aired.
The first ever Piton Soca Starz was won by Mongstar, who is now one of the island’s major recording, performing and touring Soca artiste. In 2011 the event was won by a female, Sergia, who last year made it onto the Groovy and Soca Monarch competition stages. J. Budz, who hails from Soufriere won in 2012. So who will it be for 2013? It is anyone’s guess and so far a number of aspiring Soca artistes from all over the island have expressed interest in this year’s event. And, there is still time for persons interested to collect a registration form at the WLBL office, Vieux Fort or Castries, Blazin FM, various bars across the island or at www.pitonbeer.com.
Piton Soca Starz will kick off with a press launch on Wednesday, 10th April at 10 am at the WLBL office in Vide Bouteille. There, Piton Brand Manager Rohan Lovence will unveil the components of the event for this year which is expected to include some added features and attractions. This will be followed by the first rounds of preliminary competitions- April 12 at Triple D’s on Jeremie Street, Castries, Whispers in Soufriere on Wednesday April 17, Anchors Bar, Piaye April 19, Gros Islet Friday April 26 and Dennery Fish Fry on Saturday April 27. The event will break during Saint Lucia Jazz and resume from May 17-May 31, 2013, with more preliminary rounds across the island. The semi-finals and finals of Piton Soca Starz will then follow in June.
