Trinidad, West Indies: “The Alternative Quartet Interprets Machel Montano’s Fog”

The talents of one of the Caribbean’s most sought after string quartets; Alternative Quartet has been showcased yet again. The group of ace musicians hailing from Trinidad and Tobago have made a name for themselves in the Caribbean entertainment industry quickly following their official introduction as a quartet by Machel Montano in Alternative Concept 3. It is quite fitting that their third official video would be a cover of Machel Montano’s 2013 hit single ‘The Fog’.

The video which was dramatically captured in black and white shows Andre Donawa, Wasia Ward, Andre Comeau and Nariba Herbert playing their respective instruments; violins, viola, cello and piano. The strikingly sombre depiction of creativity, coupled with a hint of rock inspired flavour is surely a unique spin to the festive Soca song. Directed by Pierre Chester, a St. Lucia native, the video tells a story of the string quartet being controlled by music. Prominence is given to a white iPod which to many can be derived as the source of control.

With astounding string arrangement by Andre Donawa it is proven that string instruments are not guided by the expectations of others. The word boring and old which have been active adjectives used to describe string instruments have been rejected and replaced with youthful rhythms and unique arrangement. Alternative Quartet’s interpretation of ‘The Fog’ is definitely going to “Fog Up The Place.”
