The Noble Douglas Lilliput Foundation For The Arts Presents The Collaborative Production, ³Vecinos²

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago… On Saturday October 19, 2013, curtains will open on the Noble Douglas Lilliput Foundation for the Arts’ (NDLFA’s) first ever collaborative production, Vecinos…we are Neighbours. The cross-cultural presentation brings two of the region’s foremost contemporary dance companies, the Venezuelan dance company, Fundación Coreoarte, and the Noble Douglas Dance Company Inc. (NDDCI), to the Queen’s Hall stage.

With an emphasis on the strength that collaborative initiatives cultivate, Vecinos brings the iconic works of neighbouring dance companies centre stage. The choreography of Coreoarte’s founder and master of movement, Carlos Orta, as well as Arnaldo Alvarez and Roxane d’Orleans Juste will feature alongside NDDCI’s diverse repertoire. The Venezuelan artistic foundation was founded in 1983 by professors Orta and Noris Ugueto with a vision to define a Latin-Caribbean body language that would be identified in a contemporary context. Orta, who trained at the Folwang Hoshule School in Essen, Germany, is best known for his work with the Limon Dance Company of New York where he succeed Jose Limon as a dancer. “We are excited to welcome our Venezuelan neighbours. These types of collaborations inspire growth and development. We look forward to Vecinos birthing closer ties and work in the future,” shared the NDLFA’s founder and artistic director, Noble Douglas.

As one of Coreoarte’s lead dancers, teachers and rehearsal directors, Trinidad and Tobago’s Terry Springer – who danced in the annual Best Village Folk Competition and with the Astor Johnson Repertory Dance Theatre of Trinidad and Tobago; the NDDCI; Caribbean School of Dancing; and the Bentley Potter School of Dance – will perform the solo piece in Allan Balfour’s Red Clay. Another highlight of the programme is NDDCI’s 1998 piece Rum and Salvation, which was born out of a choreographic collaboration between Douglas and Reggie Wilson as part of the Black Burlesque (revisited) project. As one of NDDCI’s most innovative and dynamic projects, Black Burlesque (revisited) took the form of an eight year collaboration between NDDCI and two international dance companies – post-modernist Wilson’s New York-based Fist and Heel Performance Group and Zimbabwe’s a cappella group known for its gumboot and African dance choreography, Black Umfolosi. The closing night of Vecinos will offer audiences a treat, as the young dancers of Douglas’s Lilliput Children’s Theatre will perform alongside Coreoarte’s experienced dancers in Leu soley levé.

This weekend, lovers of dance and the arts can look forward to the performances of Coreoarte and NDDCI in Vecinos. Tickets are priced at $250 for lower house seating and $200 for upper house seating and are available at Crosby’s Music Centre and Queen’s Hall box office.
