Cicely Tyson's Journey Home to Nevis

New York, Saturday, June 1, 2013 – The legendary actress Cicely Tyson is greeted after her performance in the Broadway production of Trip to Bountiful by the Hon. Mark Brantley, Deputy Premier of the Caribbean island of Nevis, the birthplace of Ms. Tyson’s parents. Brantley presented the acclaimed actress with an invitation from the government of Nevis to visit the island in September to celebrate its 30th anniversary as an independent nation. He was joined backstage to congratulate Ms. Tyson on her riveting TONY nominated performance in the play as leading actress by acclaimed musician and actor Lennie Kravitz.

Minister Brantley is in New York for the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Caribbean Week and the annual general meeting of the Caribbean Ministers of Tourism. Separately, in his capacity as Minister of Tourism for Nevis he has met with the Editors-In-Chief of the leading media groups including Richard Story, Editor-in-Chief, Departures and Laura Begley Bloom, Deputy Editor, Travel+Leisure as well as Ed Kelley, President, American Express Publishing and the key executives at the Tzell Travel Group, recognized as the number one travel management company in North America.

Under his portfolio for Culture, the Minister has used his visit to engage Ms. Tyson, Mr. Kravitz and other luminaries in the entertainment industry to forge opportunities to promote Nevis for arts and culture. He also met with Amos Winbush lll, founder and CEO of the multi-million technology company CyberSynchs, Inc. on Nevis’ participation in their program to promote entrepreneurship for the youth on the island to introduce them to opportunities for building businesses outside of the traditional educational template.
