  • Trinidad Singer/Songwriter Dale Ryan Makes Big Statement Amid Packaged Release of Colors

Trinidad and Tobago songwriter and vocalist, Dale Ryan is making some giant steps. He’s doing something hardly ever done in the Caribbean, but really, something that should always be done. Dale is releasing a brand new R&B/Pop single, complete with a video. The song, ‘Colors’ will hit the airwaves on Tuesday, April 16, but even with his method of marketing clear in his mind, Ryan is challenging the senior musicians and entertainers in T&T and the Caribbean, to share their knowledge, and work with budding entertainers to progressively make an impact in the global arena.

His words may sting some but his feelings stem from his observations over the years. Having been striving to be seen and heard since the age of 17, the artiste who made some headway in 2012 when he delivered the hit single, ‘Incredibly High’, says he has faced many challenges, the most daunting of which has been the challenge to attain radio airplay. It’s a common cry and Dale Ryan is aware of it, however he attests to making some inroads, this of course after making the necessary connections in the past year. “Before, I wasn’t well known and that in itself was a challenge. I’m a little better off right now because I’ve networked in the industry a bit in the past year and people know me a bit more- people in the industry that is,” he said. Dale has co-written songs like Machel Montano’s ‘No Lie’, Benjai’s ‘Feter’. Denise Belfon’s ‘Wining Queen’. Ryan was also partly responsible for the lyrics penned on Patrice Roberts’ ‘Permission Granted,’ Machel Montano’s Life of the Party and Michelle Xavier’s ‘ If You Want To.’ Those songs alone- all hits that pierced the airwaves during Trinidad’s Carnival 2013 season, have placed Dale Ryan in a category that’s separate and apart from the unaccomplished artiste.

Dale’s new method to better package his musical creations, has come after one year of hard thought. He realized that he’d erred when he released his 2012 single without the backing of a video, a proper public relations campaign and other things that would help the music. This time around, he’ll be marketing his music much harder, much stronger and with mindful strategies. “I want everyone to see and feel this song. On television, people should grasp what the song’s about and enjoy it and when they hear it on the radio, they must visualize the video after having seen it,” he explained.

The new single, ‘Colors’, was produced by Madmen Productions in Trinidad. It’s a song that may hit home for some. Dale says it’s a song that speaks to men who realize they’ve ended up with, what he termed, ‘bad girls’, after a relationship has already gotten underway. The video for the single was directed by Denith McNicolls of D.Media and produced by Patrice Millien of A Millien Concepts. and will essentially offer a visual understanding of the lyrics- no doubt.

Set to ultimately define himself as a strong, hard working musician, Dale Ryan is ready for what’s to come. He says he continues to look up to Trinidad and Tobago entertainer, Bunji Garlin, explaining that he feels Bunji is the most balanced entertainer in the country. “In my opinion while some artistes are capable of putting on a great stage show but they fall short in other areas, or vice versa- I think Bunji strikes the perfect balance. He’s got the performance and the lyrical ability.”
Ryan also said he is ambitiously educating himself thoroughly on the business of music and the ins and outs of the global industry. This, he says he feels all artistes, from every walk of life should strive to do.

  • Piton Soca Starz 2013 Is Here!

The fourth annual Piton Soca Starz was officially launched here on Wednesday April 10 with a press brief held at the WLBL offices, Vide Boutielle. The event was attended by past Piton Soca Starz, judges, the host for this year’s event, WLBL personnel and the media.

Speaking about plans for Piton Soca Starz 2013, brand manager Rohan Lovence said that it was indeed with heightened anticipation that he was looking forward to the event, as he indicated that his audience would too, when he explained some of the new and exciting elements this year.

Piton Soca Starz started here in 2010 as an initiative of WLBL, brewers of Piton Beer and forms part of activities for Saint Lucia carnival. Today the event is a major highlight on the calendar of activities for carnival.

“Piton Soca Starz which we are here today to launch the 2013 edition, is a music talent search which seeks to scout and discover emerging talent in the genre of Soca during Saint Lucia’s Carnival season,” Lovence noted. “And whilst many of our Carnival events are Castries based, this event traverses the entire island in search of the next big Soca star and also offers persons the opportunity to be exposed to some of our more established acts who perform on the Piton Soca Starz train at various venues,” he pointed out. He went on to note the fact that the three winners of the event thus far have hailed from different parts of the island, to underscore his point.

The first event in 2010 was won by Mongstar out of Castries, now a major Soca artiste here, Sergia from Micoud in 2011 and J Budz from Soufriere won in 2012.

The winner of Piton Soca Starz 2013 it was disclosed on Wednesday, will receive more than EC$10,000 in cash and prizes. “The champion will also have the option to choose a recording studio of his or her choice with which to record a song which will be paid for by Piton as well as an accompanying music video,” the Piton brand manager said.

This year, organizers of Piton Soca Starz will also be seeking to engage as many producers and songwriters here as a means of using the events platform to scout for emerging talent in the genre of Soca. Some of these individuals will also be utilized to mentor the performers through various workshops to be held ahead of the finals. The various stages of the event will also seek to engage the “live” audience even more this year, affording them greater opportunities to win prizes at each stop.

Piton Soca Starz which kicks off earlier this year will see the first event being staged on Friday April 12 at Triple D’s on Jeremie Street in Castries from 7 PM. It will be hosted by popular female Soca performer Q-Pid and will feature performances by Soca Psycho, Mongstar and Ambi.

The event then heads down to Soufriere, Club Whispers on Wednesday April 17, Anchors Bar in Piaye Friday April 19, Gros Islet Friday April 26 and Dennery Fish Fry Saturday April 27.

The event will break during Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts and resume Friday May 17 at Richards Bar in Augier, Saturday May 18, Raymond’s Dennery Valley, Wednesday May 29th JJ’s Back in time Marigot and Friday May 31, Caribbean Cocktails Castries.

Piton Soca Starz will continue in June with the first of two semifinals on Friday June 7, WLBL car park Vieux fort and the second on Friday June 14 Piton Party in De Yard, CSA grounds Sans Souci.

The Grande finals of Piton Soca Starz 2013 will be held on Saturday June 29, at Fond D’or, Dennery and will feature a “live” band, guest performers and an international Soca act.

Piton Soca Starz this year be recorded for broadcast by Choice TV and brought to the homes of the thousands who have made it a hit show on television as well.

Interested performers can still register for the competition at or the Piton Soca Starz Facebook page. Entry forms can also be collected at WLBL offices Vieux Fort and Castries and at the various venues where Piton Soca Starz will be held.

  • Jamaican Music Producer, Broadcaster To Be Honored In NYC

Irie Fashion Rave (IFR), the Diaspora’s premier fashion event will this year honor two industry pioneers, broadcaster Ken Williams and music producer Philip Smart. The tribute, which will form part of Irie Jam Radio’s 20th anniversary celebration, will be held at the posh Resort World Casino in Queens, New York on Sunday, April 28 starting at 6pm.

“Ken and Philip have both achieved excellence in their respective careers and today we celebrate their innumerable contributions. We applaud them for their ongoing support of our Jamaican music and culture and look forward to an unforgettable evening with these two icons” Syntyche ‘Syn’ Dawkins VP of Irie Jam Media and co-producer of IFR said.

Smart, a legendary music producer, engineer and arranger has enjoyed a successful career that span nearly five decades. As owner, operator of the successful HC&F Recording Studio in Long Island, NY, he worked with some of the biggest stalwarts in the reggae industry including Shaggy, Barrington Levy, Coco Tea, Sister Carol, Shelly Thunder, Johnny Osbourne, Augustus Pablo and Horace Andy. Among the most popular tracks he has produced are “Go Deh Yaka,” by Monyaka – which reached #14 on the UK charts – “Hot This Year” by DJ Dirtsman, “Rikers Island” by Coco Tea and “None Shall Escape” by Johnny Clarke. During the 1990’s, at the peak of reggae’s explosion in the USA, Smart recorded five albums for Shaggy, including “Hot Shot,” which was certified Diamond in the United States with an estimated 20 million sales worldwide.

Broadcaster Ken Williams, who returned home last year to assume the position of CEO of Hot 102 FM and board member of CVM Television, is a media pioneer who has had a distinguished career in radio and television in the USA. In the 70’s, he served as Program Director at Inner City Broadcasting/WLIB and was responsible for introduced legendary acts like Bob Marley, Toot Hibbert and Jimmy Cliff to the New York radio listeners and for incorporating a Caribbean music format at the station. He later pioneered Caribbean programs on WNWK 105.5FM and later at WVIP 93.5FM where he hosted the popular Ken Williams Show. Ken has also had an eye for beauty and was instrumental in launching the long running Miss Jamaica/USA Beauty Pageant. He was also a successful business entrepreneur, owning and operating New York entertainment landmarks like Club Negril and Carib New York.

Last year IFR honored Sirius Satellite radio Program Director/ radio host Pat McKay and artiste manager Robert Livingston with ‘Lifetime Achievement Awards’ for their outstanding contribution to the entertainment industry, while Jamaican rapper Heavy D and music producer Joel Chin were each honored posthumously for their contribution to the Jamaican music industry. Previously Kingsley Cooper, the man credited with launching the careers of international models Nadine Willis, Jaunel McKenzie, Gaye McDonald, Jeneil Williams and Carla Campbell, was honored.

Dawkins also announced that Yandy Smith of VH1s Love and Hip Hop will be guest hosting and showcasing her jewelry line ‘Everything Girls Love.’ IFR will be hosted by DJ Roy (Irie Jam Radio, New York) and the ‘Fluffy Diva’ Miss Kitty (Jamaica) with music by Dubb Master Chris, Road International, Steelie Bashment and DJ Cali B.

  • Caribbean Songbird Jalena Drops New Single and Video, “1 Night Stand”

Caribbean songbird Jalena makes a splash with the new video for her provocative hit single, “1 Night Stand.” The song was officially released on Jalena’s Bad Reputation album, back in May 2012. It is the third full-length studio effort from this eclectic singer and songwriter from Tortola, British Virgin Islands, who effortlessly blends R&B and pop with reggae undertones, giving fans a taste of her diverse island heritage and fusion sound.

“1 Night Stand” has tongues wagging with its suggestive title, and tackles a subject Jalena felt needed to be addressed. “I wrote this song because it’s a topic that hasn’t really been broached upon from a female perspective,” she reveals. “I can certainly relate to it and it was surprising to see how many other women also share similar experiences. It was a fun song to do.”

The track showcases Jalena’s range and talent, lacing her sultry vocals over an easy-breezy island pop rhythm, which was produced by Platinum Sellers Beats. The “1 Night Stand” video was shot on location in Tortola and is directed by Gabriel A. Stephen, with the song’s writer, Jalena, at the helm of its tantalizing concept. “We wanted to capture the vibe of the song,” Jalena discloses. “I wanted the video to depict this delicate experience from my perspective, so I can hopefully add to an international dialog for ladies everywhere.”

  • Taj Weekes & Adowa – A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen Video Gallery

With only 2 weeks left until the release of their 4th CD, PARIAH IN TRANSIT, Taj Weekes & Adowa is sharing the last video from their internationally acclaimed album, A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen (AWLSK). As an added treat to their fans, the band celebrates the success of AWLSK with a gallery featuring some video singles from the album. Click through each image and enjoy Taj Weekes & Adowa at work.

This never before seen video, Sunny Innocents was recorded in a late night/early morning recording session.

Shot in St. Lucia, this laid back tune features Taj Weekes, surrounded members of Adowa, friends and family by a cozy campfire on a beautiful beach.

From commemorating the birth of Southern Sudan with Janjaweed, to lamenting the delayed and ineffectual action following Hurricane Katrina in Rain Rain, or asking the question of whatever happened to Peace & Love, Taj Weekes & Adowa solidified their place in music history as leading the renaissance of roots reggae music. In an interview with Reggaeville discussing the album, the band’s influence on reggae music today is summed up as such:

You are truly a griot in that sense: a troubador, singing these songs of freedom, not to sell some sort of agenda but to teach things to people… things that I don’t think a lot of people have actually ever been taught in song. They may have scratched the surface in progressive radio or read a little bit in Mother Jones or thought about these things by watching Rachel Maddow, but you can give it to people on a higher level, an artistic level that is unique in its reggae form and certainly unique in mainstream pop. It’s Bob Dylan. It’s that time in music when people were taking risks. – Reggaeville, 2012

Thank you for supporting the music, exchanging video links on social media, and coming to see the band live. A special thanks to all of the creators/directors of these videos – Digital Alchemy/Sidekick Creative (Janjaweed), Kevin O’Leary (YARFTH), Drew Renaud (Peace & Love, Anthems of Hope), and Monica Hoenig (Sunny Innocents).

Until……let your vibes be high and your message mighty.

  • UK Beats- Trinidad & Tobago Flavor. Brent Anthony Eyes Global Market With Electrified

Another Trinidad voice will soon be penetrating international airwaves. Brent Anthony is not a Soca artiste delivering that traditional islander’s melody. In fact his crossover appeal has caught the attention of producers in the United Kingdom.

Anthony’s latest single, ‘Electrified’ was produced in London by Gregg X and Martin Raymond and he says he really wanted to get that authentic dance music sound so he decided to go to the source. Already, the track has peaked the interest of Right Recordings in the United Kingdom. The company is an independent music label distributed under the Universal Music banner. For Anthony, it’s a step up. He’s been working hard over the years and he’s hoping that this latest development would mean a breakthrough for his music.

The elder brother of Wong and Sean Nebula of T&T’s Nebula868, Brent has been trying to garner the attention of the music industry’s execs locally and overseas- the people who will make his music matter to the world. He’s currently aligned with Boston’s On The Spot Entertainment and even with Electrified having only been recently released, the young vocalist isn’t sparing any chances. He’s already finished up another single called ‘This Pain I Feel’, which was produced by On The Spot Entertainment. That single will be released later on this year.

‘Electrified’ was written by Brent and his brother Wong Nebula while the yet to be released, ‘This Pain I Feel’ was written by Anthony and Saloi Chyn-Vun. Looking at music’s continuous transformation, Brent Anthony says he feels it’s now or never for him. His passion for music’s varying genres, particularly house music, dance and R&B has equipped him with an open mind when it comes to the infusion of collective melodies. “I’ll never be one dimensional. I really believe that music is the only universal language so why should any artiste from any country be boxed into one or two genres? Why shouldn’t music be fused and new sounds created? That’s what life is all about- creating new beginnings,” he said thoughtfully.

At home in Trinidad, Brent Anthony is making the necessary links and marketing his sound internationally- a sound while may seem far from the norm at home, will ultimately be accepted across the seas. He promises to continue the hardwork. He believes that it’s the only way he’ll make the necessary inroads. His encouragement? A simple saying- “the race is not to the swift but to those who endure to the end.”

  • Fast Rising Dancehall/Reggae Artist Touchless

“Success is a journey not a destination” says Fast Rising Dancehall/Reggae Artist Touchless

Born and raised in Jamaica, Brandon Ryan Campbell knew from a young age that he needed to express himself through the arts. Learning to play the trumpet and saxophone in elementary came naturally to him and he reveled in stage performances throughout his school years. Brandon cites Spragga Benz, Bounty Killer, Super Cat, Ninja Man, Shabba Ranks, Tenor Saw, Nicodemus and Bob Marley as some of his musical inspirations and from each of them understood the importance of a message through music, whether political, love or just making one dance to feed the soul. Although music was in his blood, it wasn’t until his move to Toronto, Canada that Brandon took his God given talent more seriously and launched his fast rising career.

Now residing in Canada and taking the stage name of Touchless, he spends countless hours writing music, honing his craft and performing throughout Canada. Touchless knew and understood that he needed the stamp of approval of his native land, after all the music within him was cultivated in the birth place of dancehall and reggae… Jamaica! Touchless did a promotional tour throughout the island, performing on various stage shows and interviews on several radio stations, re introducing himself to music lovers.

As his life motto states “Success is a journey not a destination”, Touchless understands that the satisfaction and rewards he reaps from music must be shared, and that is why he dreams of building a center/home for the homeless children in Jamaican who are living on the streets. “I don’t want to take from music, I want to give through music” he states.

  • Tanya Carter Calls On Birch For Ex-Boyfriend

The sultry voice from Belize meets authentic Reggae

After more than two dozen performances across the world, Belizean songstress, Tanya Carter, has decided to spread her wings to Jamaica. Excited about crossing over to Reggae, she has been working closely with Christopher Birch of Birchill Records, who produced and co-wrote her newest single: Ex-boyfriend.

Singing since the age of 5, Tanya takes her inspiration from Jamaican greats: Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, and Burning Spear; and discovered at an early age her passion for Reggae and Jamaica culture. The Belizean is no stranger to Jamaicans, having opened for Etana, Luciano, Lexxus and Morgan Heritage and decided to come to the home of Reggae music to get a better understanding of the culture around the genre she loves, and to work with some of the best producers in the business.

With several years of performing under her belt, she is currently working on her second album, which contains Reggae, Jazz, Electro, Pop, Dancehall and R&B infusions. Her versatility knows no bounds and her passion for music has resulted in a number of accolades. The greatest of which is being named “Best Female Vocalist of the Year” at the Belize Music Awards three years in a row (2010, 2011 and 2012). Tanya’s debut album Daydreaming was named the best album in Belize upon its release in 2011 and tunes from the album graced the airwaves in Jamaica, Los Angeles, Africa, Mexico and even climbed to number 3 on the Lithuanian music charts.

Now, on a path to making authentic Reggae music, Tanya’s new single Ex-boyfriend, produced by Birchill Records, is a one of a kind composition. The infectious beat and catchy lyrics make it impossible for you to listen to the song just once and fully captures the common emotions involved with having an ex-lover you are not quite over, something many ladies, and even some men, can identify with.

Christopher Birch of Birchill Records says he was happy to work with Tanya:”She is a real artiste, a great singer with the full package, she writes, she harmonizes, she is very talented and it was a pleasure working with her. I think she can make it in this industry, Reggae is a very aggressive industry, so she has to put out the right energy, which I think she has. We have plans for more tunes, and the next one is very catchy, so Jamaica needs to watch for Tanya.”

Tanya’s sultry voice and precise melody on the track allows for easy listening and in no time you realize you are singing along. Although several songs have been written about this relationship dilemma, Ex-boyfriend brings a fresh spin on the situation. She belts “I never knew this feeling that you’re giving me would take me to another place with your love, see I never knew the loving was so good that it scared me and it made me want to fly away with your love” in the first verse, telling a tale of the love she has for her ex-boyfriend despite being with a new beau.

Tanya shows her command of patois in the chorus where she sings: “Although mi new man a treat me right, mi wah back mi ex-boyfriend”. And the story continues to unravel, after she confesses: “I must admit I’m not over you although we parted ‘bout a year or two, my new man he’ll never know, you’re the star of my show”.

Get the full story by listening to Tanya’s first Jamaican-produced single Ex-Boyfriend.
