  • New ShakeDown Riddim Feat. Various Artists (2016 Soca)

It is a fearsome challenge, but it is one Precision Productions relishes at the start of every Carnival season. The combination of high expectations from eager fans along with each team member’s drive to surpass the work of the previous year casts the fertile groundwork needed to annually invigorate Soca lovers with a complete musical Shake Down!

This newly released riddim is a sincere reflection of that sentiment as Precision’s characteristic enthusiasm and love of vocation swell within every note from the feisty baseline to the sparkling chords, demanding vigorous movement from the second you hit play.

Naturally, for this level of stimulating sound high-octane vocalists who could exhilarate audiences universally were called upon to channel the unwavering rhythmic power.

Setting things off is Nadia Batson who declares she has a Split Personality, which only surfaces this time of year, while Akeem “Preedy” Chance warns that he is just plain Unruly, even as Patrice Roberts sings about a Blush that refuses to fade. Meanwhile Kerwin Du Bois brazenly proclaims I Am D One, just as Tian Winter revels being In De Middle, and with a heart filled with gratitude GBM Nutron closes things off devotedly chanting So Blessed. All of them give dynamic performances that make it near impossible to patiently wait for the festival to officially begin.

2016 continues to be a year of melodic experimentation for the team. New ideas are being transformed into reality to ensure fans of this genre savor yet another year of mind-blowing music, which will vibrate limbs and fete-ready feet straight into this otherworldly street-party without missing a single beat.

  • Terry Seales – Driftin (2016 Soca)

Terry Seales resurrects the true spirit of Power Soca with the release of his 2016 road anthem “Driftin”.

“Driftin’” is a throwback to the classic Road March sound of the 90’s with its trademark horns and double time drum cadence. The track, however, strikes the right balance with producer Marlon Roach’s modern approach and Seales’ vocal delivery completing the elements of a contemporary soca hit.

“We are losing that breakaway freedom that Carnival is really supposed to be about. Everyone seems to be more interested in how they look, creating social media posts and sharing them than just enjoying themselves in the moment. Driftin’ demands that you live in the moment,” the St Ann’s based singer said of the project.

The song, which was written by Seales and Jean-Paul “President” Douglas and mixed and mastered by Neil Bernard, is already being declared a Soca Monarch title contender by music industry insiders. Seales, however, is keeping grounded and adopting a “one day at a time” approach as far as his expectations.

“My focus has always been to create music I believe in. This is no different. But I must admit it’s heartening to have your creative work embraced so organically. My PR and Marketing has not even started and the people already love it. Give thanks,” Seales said.

The former New Creation crooner said he will let the people decide if he should enter the song in any competitions. In the meantime he remains focused on creating more music.

“I’m back in the creative zone where we never stop working. There is always a new melody coming to mind. A new riddim to listen to or a collaboration to be made, music for me is 24/7 365 days a year.

  • The Perfect Start To Real Carnival Revelry- Fire Fete Announces Coolers Welcome Edition And Superb Soca Cast.

A bump in the road in 2015 will not be a deterrent for the Trinidad and TobagoFire Services (TTFS), as they again get ready to “Heat Up De place”with their hosting of Fire Fete 2016 – The Re-Ignition, on January 16th, 2016.Touted as a “Cooler Fete”,Fire Fete, which is known for being the first big fete annually on Trinidad and Tobago’s carnival calendar, is already creating a buzz as fete-goers warm up to the “Cooler” option.Going back to basics, the TTFS will be partnering with reputed event promotional stalwart company, Tropix Entertainment for their 2016 fete production.

Acting Fire Chief, Kenny Gopaul says the fete’s proceeds will go toward the development of each division of the Trinidad and Tobago fire service, to effect necessary enhancements to their services. He wants the people to come out and support it this year as they usually do, and guarantees the fun will be immeasurable. Commenting on security for patrons, Acting Fire Chief Gopaul assured that nothing will be spared in ensuring that patrons feel safe in 2016. “We are mandated by the court of law to provide sufficient security personnel to man the fete. January 16th will be no different,” he said.

The undisputed ‘Fireman’himself Bunji Garlin will ignite the night, together withhis wife Fay-Ann Lyonsand the Asylum Vikings. Also keeping the flames ablaze will be Lyrikal, 5 Star Akil, Third Bass, Iwer George, Teddison John from St. Lucia and many other entertaining soca stars. Bunji Garlin has thrown his full support behind the event, saying he sees Fire Fete as a staple on the carnival calendar.

One organizer at Tropix Entertainment has indicated the desire to get feting back to what many remember it to be. “We’re going to be shaking things up a little with this cooler fete edition. We’ve never done this before but we know people really enjoy cooler fetes in T&T and we want the people to come out in their numbers and have a great time, like we all used to. Enough with the “stushness” as Third Bass has said, let us fete again!,” said the organizer.

There has been some public outbursts by people in the entertainment industry and otherwise, to have carnival return to its original form. For years, Fire Fete has delivered the elements of an authentic Carnival atmosphere and vibe and even with crowd numbers proving less than desired in recent years, organizers truly believe that this is a fete for the people- those who live and breathe the essence of a true Trinbago carnival.

Tickets for Fire Fete – The Re-ignition, are already on sale at popular ticket outlets for just $200. The Soca Drome at the Hasely Crawford Stadium is the venue and on show night, people can expect that all stops will be pulled. “We’re going for non stop vibes and energy, on stage and off stage, so prepare yourselves because only the fittest will survive,” said the event organizer.

  • Opera and Steel: Introducing Joslynne Sealey

TORONTO, ON, Canada: Having made its international debut on August 8th, 2015 in Trinidad, Joslynne Sealey – Famous Arias has fulfilled her fans’ requests for a definitive CD of her operatic vocal work. Throughout her circa 25-year-career of singing professionally, she is most proud of her collaborations with Trinidad & Tobago’s national instrument; the steelpan.

Proudly featured on her CD are six collaborations between Sealey and Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra. They invited her to be a featured performer at their biennial gala Christmas concerts, “Classical Jewels” (1979, 1981 and 1983). Their relationship was so harmonious that All Stars invited Sealey to accompany them on their tours to Toronto, and to the UK. She recounts memories from those international tours on her CD.

Additionally, Sealey was a member of the only Caribbean operatic team sent to a Carifesta. This four-person team represented Trinidad & Tobago at Carifesta IV (Barbados; 1981). Three of her “live” performances at Carifesta IV are featured on her CD with accompaniment by Lindyann Bodden-Ritch (piano), and Patrick Flores (tenor).

Last but not least, this CD concludes with a recording of Sealey singing “I’ll Have Revenge” (from Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”). She explains the significance of this aria in the penultimate, conversational track on her CD. Rumoured to be the most difficult aria for a soprano voice, Sealey addresses this aria with passion and expertise. FYI: this aria is her fans’ favourite!

    TESTIMONIALS

It’s a great record. I really enjoyed her voice and accuracy!
    Etienne Charles

This unique CD compilation is long overdue. Joslynne’s voice is a T&T national treasure.
Alvin Daniell; Producer, Lyricist, and Cultural Researcher – MAJOR & minor Productions Ltd.

Joslynne Sealey’s album overturns the notion that only calypso and reggae come from the Caribbean. This CD is a rare and exquisite delight!
    Nathalie Taghaboni; Author, and Photographer-Journalist

What a nice slice of history from one on T&T’s “cultural icons.” So often we fail to document the unique work of T&T artists, especially where it involves the steel pan. Luckily, some lovely moments in the country’s cultural history are captured on Joslynne Sealey’s new CD, and given wings on a soaring voice!
Anthony Pierre; Percussionist and Bandleader – KALABASH

The stunning operatic vocals by Joslynne Sealey, plus the sophisticated accompaniment from Trinidad All Stars, results in a combined musical delight! And if you like this type of music, then this CD will be a treat for you … as it was for me!
Jai Ojah Maharaj; Broadcaster and Program Producer – CHIN Radio, Toronto (1981 – 2015)

This CD transported me into a wonderful musical opera concert; especially listening to Rejoice Greatly. Indeed, all the steelpan arrangements were well executed. I experienced a marvelous and proud feeling about our national instrument’s capabilities exemplified by the well-known, award-winning steel band, Trinidad All Stars. And last but not least, I was left speechless by the talent of Joslynne Sealey’s voice. A remarkable CD!!!

  • Congolese Cultural Creations

    2015-10-21_1030

Contributing cultural fashions to New York Fashion Week is always welcomed in a city of cultural diversity. During market week in September, African elegance arrived at New York’s Plaza Hotel. The Kapy Bash Mode collection debuted in a collective showcase of international presenters to an audience of style enthusiast, fashion influencers and media makers. Kapy Bash Mode offers African ethnic gowns that are inspired by cultures from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Kapy Bash Mode uses liputa, ankara, french lace, bazin, satin and linen fabrics. There is a soon to debut resort line of acrylic swimwear fashions and ankara boxer shorts for men. The creator, Kapinga Bashala has been designing for the Kapy Bash Mode brand for twenty-six years. She has designed custom gowns for television personalities, government dignitaries, pageants and bridal parties.

“There are many negative misconceptions about African cultures and lifestyle. Contemporary African fashions are demystifying the negative stereotypes. With each ethnic gown I create, I share an experience of Congolese’s cultural decadence with the world.” explains Kapinga.

With her busy schedule, Kapinga still finds time to be philanthropic by helping to fund educational programs for underprivileged children in the Dem. Rep. of Congo. Kapinga also helps misfortunate Congolese women develop fundamental skills for starting a small business. Half of KBM’s online procedes goes to fund the charity ‘Kapy Bash for Mothers and Children’. Sharing culture through fashions not only helps others experience unique heritage, it helps preserve heritage through collective economics. Now that is a sustainable trend that is always in style.

Lyrikal Takes You to the Land of the Free
One of the most liberating moments one will ever experience is that feeling of freeness when your plane touches the runway at Piarco Airport, or you arrive at the first fete or every time you put on a carnival costume and take to streets to participate in greatest show on earth, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) Carnival. Then the music hits you, and somehow your waistline and your feet adopt a mind of their own and without effort you begin to move. You are dancing and parading with your hands in the air because at that point in time it is the only thing that matters.

It is no exaggeration that once you have filled the shoes of a feter or masquerader it is only then that you truly understand the true meaning of “Freedom.”

Once again Lyrikal has used his latest offering so perfectly titled “Freedom” to help us relive these freeing moments everywhere we go. Even if you have never been to T&T’s Carnival, or experienced an all-inclusive party, once you hear the drums, the chords, and the melody with Lyrikal’ s voice instructing you to “close your eyes and feel how freedom does feel” you want to experience a Carnival.

The infectious lyrics and the music were created by Jesse College Boy Stewart, his brother Shawn Spine Stewart, Ato #5 Williams of Zigboi Music, Alex Kubiyashi Barnwell and Lyrikal himself whom together has created a masterpiece. Freedom promises to raise your spirits, raise your hands and keep you dancing like you are permanently in the land of the free.

His evolution has birthed new anthems for carnival season and beyond, much to the delight of soca fans globally.

Crafting catchy tunes in his Arima-based studio known as The Garage, Mega Mick recently inked an exclusive worldwide digital distribution deal with New York-based music label FOX FUSE, thereby bringing his music to the international audience. “Being able to have the opportunity to release my music worldwide was always a dream of mine,” states Corneal. “I do music because of the love and I want people to love the music I release, as well. I think my willingness to try new things is what is different, and also my love for dance music.”

  • Haitian Immigrants Clash with Dominican Forces in “Cristo Rey”

Ongoing conflicts between undocumented immigrants from Haiti living and working toward a better life in the adjoining island nation of the Dominican Republic, and the more recent hostilities this past summer with the deportation of Haitian men, women, and children born there to non-citizen parents, is the inspiration behind the new feature film, Cristo Rey.

A selection at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, this vibrantly shot and contemporary update of Romeo and Juliet, is a powerful indictment of the racism and poverty in the Dominican Republic. Set in the titular Santo Domingo shantytown, Janvier’s (James Saintil) mother is deported to Haiti after saving him from bigoted policemen. To make ends meet, the kind-hearted teenager of mixed Haitian-Dominican descent takes a job with local kingpin El Bacá (Leonardo Vasquez) as a bodyguard to his sister Joceyln (Akari Endo), who Janvier soon discovers dated his estranged Dominican half-brother Rudy (Yasser Michelén).

Upon discovering Janvier and Jocelyn have fallen in love and plan to escape the barrio, Rudy’s jealousy over their relationship, as well as his denial over his own Afro-Caribbean identity, sets in motion a series of events, which threatens their entire community. Director Leticia Tonos Paniagua’s vibrant visuals, reflect hope in a background of deep-rooted and explicit violence and prejudice against Haitians, which has permeated the Dominican Republic for way too long.

Romola Lucas of The Caribbean Film Academy (CaFA), shares, “For the third edition of the Caribbean Film Series, we desired to focus on a filmmaker from a Spanish-speaking country in the region.” She continues, “With the conflict gaining attention worldwide, and because of its perspective, we thought it was timely to show this particular film, along with a film from the Haitian perspective, to engage artists and the community, in conversation with each other.”

Co-presented by BAMcinématek and the Brooklyn Cinema Collective, in partnership with the Haiti Cultural Exchange, Cristo Rey will screen at BAM Rose Cinemas on Thursday, December 3rd, at 7:30pm. A Q&A with director Leticia Tonos Paniagua, will follow. The short film Purgatorio (12 min – 2014), by Haitian writer, producer, and director Martine Jean, precedes the film.

  • City Rock Ent’s Artists cheers Jamaican Orphanage, SOS Children’s Villages

Texas based record label City Rock Entertainment’s artists will be delivering holiday cheers to the children of the Jamaican orphanage at the SOS Children’s Villages Jamaica.

SOS Children’s Villages is an independent, non-governmental international development organization which has been working to meet the needs and protect the interests and rights of children since 1949. The children have many basic needs that City Rock Entertainment hope to help alleviate, and also bring musical cheers with the help of City Rock Ent reggae and dancehall artists Delus, Tabeta CShae and Humility.

“I’ve always taken the Luke 12:48 scripture “For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required” to heart” explained City Rock Entertainment CEO Marlon Baugh. “We often take having a family for granted, I can only imagine how it feels for those children during the holidays. I am thankful for all my blessings and how can I have so much without given back. I’m not even talking about toys, I am talking about basic needs such as toiletries, bedding. My team and I just want to make a difference, see a smile.”

You can give children a second chance in life
If you choose to sponsor a child with SOS Children’s Villages, you will be directly supporting an orphaned or abandoned child. For SOS Children, the word “sponsor” means money is for “supporting” or “helping to pay for” a child in need. 100% of child sponsorship donations with SOS Children go into a pot from which the child and their new family are clothed, fed, educated and loved. The sponsor gets information about the child, can write and visit and see what difference their money makes.
