  • NEW AND OLD SOUNDS FROM LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN FEATURING BÉLO, CURUPIRA, AND DJ NICKODEMUS

    Saturday June 28, 2014 @ 5:30 PM
@ The Uplands South Street Seaport (between Fulton & Front St)
    Free

Co-presented by River to River and Isabel Soffer/Live Sounds
From an accordion fronted Tex-Mex punk-band to socially conscious Haitian songs and from ambient folk and electronica to the New York debut of the king of Colombian vallenato and cumbia, this Caribbean and Latin America festival travels the crossroads, the blurs and the beats of traditional and contemporary sounds from around the world and around the corner.
Fronteras series curator Isabel Soffer of Live Sounds, has been at the forefront of the global music scene in the US since its formative years. Enthralled by music that is deeply based in tradition but moves in innovative directions, she seeks border-crossing artists that stay true to their roots. The groups in Fronteras each connect to a magical space where modern and older-styles collide in surprising, often danceable ways.
Saturday night features socially conscious artists that speak to today’s political and social movements while rocking:
Haiti’s outspoken groove innovator BélO has been hailed as the island’s musical ambassador to the world. The globally informed singer, songwriter, and guitarist interweaves Afro-Caribbean Haitian traditions with jazz, rock, and reggae alongside a progressive voice for social and political transformation into what he calls “ragganga.

“Bogotá-based Curupira are a groundbreaking group who perform an original style of music they call “funklorica.” They are known for incorporating traditions like gaita, chalupa, fandango, puya, champeta, currulao, and joropo from the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, and the eastern plains of Colombia with contemporary urban sounds including rap, rock, funk, and classical Indian music. Curupira are also known for their strong socially conscious lyrics that reflect their country’s political situation and the world’s. In fact much of their music comes from areas where there is ongoing war, disputes over territory, and other conflicts keeping their music vital.

From the early days of Giant Step, to today’s Turntables on the Hudson parties,
Nickodemus has been a key element in the NYC dance music scene for over 10 years. As a DJ and producer, he explores the intersection of Urban and World Music with sounds of Funk, Folk, Jazz, Hip Hop, House, and Dub – all with a message of peace, awareness and love for the dance.

“River To River, an LMCC public engagement initiative, inspires residents, workers, and visitors in Lower Manhattan, by connecting them to artists, new ideas and perspectives, and other art-lovers to demonstrate the role that artists play in creating vibrant, sustainable communities.

River To River is made possible with support from the Alliance for Downtown New York, American Express, The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, HUD, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Westfield World Trade Center, and in part by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, as well as other underwriters.”

  • Head today the 4th Annual “Hope and A Future” – A Celebration of Haïti

Brooklyn, NY, April 17, 2014 – On Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 12pm, Community2Community (C2C), the Brooklyn-based nonprofit, service organization working with communities in Haïti to achieve self-sufficiency, will kick off its 4th Annual “Hope and A Future” – A Celebration of Haïti at the Christian Cultural Center (CCC) Campus, 12020 Flatlands Avenue in Brooklyn, NY.

Sponsored by the Christian Cultural Center, New York Daily News, WBLS FM/WLIB AM, and New York Amsterdam News, this year’s celebration will feature the C2C Ayiti Marché, (Haitian Kreyòl for “Open Market”) with international and local artisans, and the premiere of “The Story of the Trees” (beginning at 2:00pm), a multimedia theatrical experience depicting the reforestation initiative of the C2C Haïti Restoration and Transformation Pilot Project (HRTPP). The cast of artists include international Haitian musician BélO, Haitian Jazz Ensemble Mozayik, Brooklyn dance troupe Francine E. Ott/The Walk, CCC Performing Arts Department and Haitian child prodigy, Mabou. This compelling story weaves music and culture to make a case for environmental protection and self-sufficiency.

Prior to the “Story of the Trees” production, the campus of CCC will transform into the C2C Ayiti Marché at 12pm to bring local, national and international businesses and organizations together for a cultural exchange of information, services and products to the Caribbean and surrounding communities. Attendees will partake in the tastes and sounds of Haïti, while exploring Haïti’s rich artistic and cultural contributions through various artisans and exhibitors. Festive Haitian music, raffles, giveaways, etc. will occur throughout the Marché. Radio personality, Barbara De Laleu and surprise guests will host the C2C Ayiti Marché.

Proceeds from the 4th Annual “Hope and A Future” – A Celebration of Haïti will help complete the C2C Water Initiative and promote environmental stabilization in Petit Goâve, Haïti. C2C and its mountainside Partner Community launched the C2C Water Initiative in April 2011, building a gravity-fed water distribution system that currently provides access to water for the entire community. Due to the rapidly deteriorating environmental conditions at the site of the water source, C2C and their project partner Pinchina Consulting responded by implementing an environmental stabilization plan in 2013 to protect the investments made thus far. This stabilization plan began with the community planting 14,000 seedlings to slow down the massive deforestation and soil erosion around the water source.

Now in 2014, C2C is looking to move toward the completion of the Water Initiative by breaking ground on the final phase. The most expensive and labor-intensive component of the initiative: the installation of a distribution system that will bring the water to several communities, rather than having them walk miles to the original source each day.

“Clean water continues to be a primary challenge in Haïti. Along with that, is the need to understand the indisputable role the environment and the trees play in preserving and upholding the country’s water sources,” said C2C CEO + FireStarter Marie-Yolaine Eusebe.

The C2C Ayiti Marché is free and open to the public. Tickets for “The Story Of The Trees” start at $15. To participate as an artisan in the C2C Ayiti Marché or purchase tickets for the “The Story Of The Trees,” Community2Community (C2C) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, service organization whose vision is creating self-sufficient communities by working with the community.

  • Champeon releases “Woman’s Anthem”

Columbia, South Carolina– Ronnel Ramirez known to Soca music fans by his sobriquet Champeon, has recently stepped out of his comfort zone and released a new Reggae track entitled “Woman’s Anthem”.

The South Carolina based entertainer created this new Reggae offering with the objective of affirming all of society’s women of substance along with all their wonderful contributions. He appropriately released the song in May (a month synonymous with positive sentiment towards women).
The song was written by Champeon and arranged, produced and mastered by AJ & Sixman beats (Quantum Beats) and features the melodic sounds of the Steel Pan on a smooth Reggae beat.
According to Champeon, “I wrote the song as a tribute to all the supportive women of the world for being sturdy rocks for every man and also as a big ‘Thank You’ the special women in my family i.e. my wife and mother”.
When asked about his definition of a ‘woman of substance’ he shared, “To me a woman of substance is one who is strong and passionate in every sense, from her sweet, sensual aroma to the manner with which she takes care of herself and the household, and is her man’s right hand. This song is for women who are not only beautiful in character but who also possess strength in character i.e. the strength to overcome adversity and triumph despite the odds”.
Regarding his foray into the world of Reggae, Champeon stated that although he is known for recording and performing Soca he also writes a variety of musical styles and decided after Trinidad’s 2014 Carnival to create a positive song, a song which organically became the uplifting Reggae track “Woman’s Anthem”. Champeon added, “I wanted to be and do something different on this track and my spirit guided me to release my first Reggae single.
Champeon looks forward to performing this new track at his many upcoming North-American Caribbean festival gigs and remains open to future Soca and Reggae collaborations.
He further stated that the song which has so far been receiving positive feedback from fans and industry colleagues is a show of appreciation to the feminine gender and a dedication to the 300 girls who were recently kidnapped in Nigeria.

  • NYC Groovin In The Park Festival (JUN 29) Announces Line Up – Air Supply, Chronixx, Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffiths, John Holt, Judy Mowatt & Bob Andy

NYC’s 4th annual Groovin’ In The Park concert will hit Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, NY on Sunday, June 29th, 2014. This year serves up an exciting dose of reggae, soul and pop-rock performances into one jam-packed day. Jamaica’s soulful hitmaker Beres Hammond and Australian pop-rock legends Air Supply will headline the show. Chronixx, one of Jamaica’s most-talked about rising roots stars, and his band Zinc Fence Redemption will make their NYC festival debut, and Marcia Griffiths celebrates her 50th year in reggae with a few of her friends (John Holt, Judy Mowatt and Bob Andy). The one-day extravaganza will also showcase exciting elements of Jamaican culture with its mouthwatering cuisine and the island’s exciting fashion. For more information, log on to www.groovininthepark.com.

With over 100 million albums sold worldwide, Australian soft-rock pop legends Air Supply have scored eight Top 10 Billboard hits in the United States, including anthems like “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All,” “Good Bye,” “Its Never Too Late” and “Lost In Love,” which was named “Song Of The Year” in 1980. The group mesmerized music fans at the 2011 Jamaica Jazz & Blues festival and their upcoming performance at Groovin In The Park will be no different. In 2013, Air Supply was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame.

Known to many as the “Otis Redding of Reggae,” Beres Hammond has been producing and pouring out his smoky-sweet vocals over every kind of riddim track for almost 40 years. Beres Hammond, who ignited New York City with musical flames when he last appeared on Groovin’ In The Park in 2012, has a track record of hits that is unprecedented in reggae, including “Rockaway,” “In Love With You,” “What One Dance Can Do,” “She Loves Me Now,” “Step Aside,” “Double Trouble” and “Putting Up Resistance.” His latest Grammy-nominated album One Love, One Life (2012, VP Records) peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Top 10 Reggae Album chart and was lauded by Rolling Stone as “one of the best albums of a four-decade-long career.”

Hailed as the only Jamaican female vocalist to have chart-topping success in such a vast range of styles (doo-wop covers, rock steady, roots and funk), Marcia Griffiths’ versatility and willingness to adapt has worked to her advantage. From her international break as one of the I-Threes (Bob Marley’s iconic backing trio) to her chart-topping success with “Electric Boogie” (the 80s hit prompting the Electric Slide dance), the First Lady of Reggae’s accomplishments have commanded royal respect throughout her 40-year plus career. During her set at Groovin In The Park, she will perform alongside original I-Threes’ member Judy Mowatt, veteran singer John Holt and her long-time singing partner Bob Andy. Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt were recently honored with the “Reggae Ambassador’s Award” in New York by VP Records and Groovin Inc.

The 21-year-old roots vocalist Chronixx is one of hottest new reggae artists on the circuit. He recently dropped his new project Dread & Terrible, which was written entirely by himself. The conscious singer-songwriter has been building a name for himself with energetic live performances and raves reviews from media and industry alike. In a recent Billboard interview, Island Records’ founder Chris Blackwell said Chronixx’s music is “completely fresh, uplifting and very pure.” Major Lazer selector Walshy Fire added that “the world will recognize him as one of reggae’s greatest artists.” He already has an impressive catalogue of smash hits – including “Behind Curtain,” “Tell Mi Now,” “Here Comes Trouble,” “African Heritage” and his patriotic island anthem “Smile Jamaica” that has placed him on reggae’s frontline.

Groovin’ In The Park 2014 will be a day to remember. Sponsors supporting the celebration this year include Grace Kennedy, TD Bank, SQPA, Nutrament, MoneyGram, The Smoke House, The Door Restaurant, Bullzii and Groovin Radio.

Since 2011, Groovin’ In The Park has consistently brought world-class entertainment to New York City. Previous performers include Gladys Knight, Babyface, Machel Mantano, Beres Hammond, Jimmy Cliff, Patti Labelle and TGT (Tyrese, Ginuwine & Tank).

  • New EP (June 10) – Jo Mersa – Bob Marley’s Grandson Drops Debut EP (COMPLEX Premieres First Single)

As the eldest son of Stephen Marley and grandson of Bob Marley, Jo Mersa is set to release his debut EP Comfortable on June 10, 2014 on the Marley family’s imprint Ghetto Youths International (GYI).

Jo is currently on the road performing the entire Comfortable EP as the opening act on Stephen Marley’s Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life Tour. The tour spans over 30 cities in the United States and concludes in New Orleans, LA on May 24. See full schedule below.

Jo’s Comfortable spans pop, hip hop, EDM and dancehall influences while showcasing his deft vocals, clever songwriting and flourishing production skiills. Each of the EP’s riddims (except for “Bogus” which was produced by his uncle Damian Marley) were created by Jo, working alongside his father’s keyboard player Llamar “Riff Raff” Brown, with Stephen Marley handling the final productions. Many of the EP’s songs focus on Jo’s personal experience with women and their complex relationships. On the sleek electro-dancehall hybrid title track, which is also accompanied with a video, he cleverly rhymes about a budding relationship contrasted by his sweetly sung hook. On “Bogus,” he addresses a lack of sincerity in some women, while club-friendly tunes like “Bad So,” All To Me” and “Perfect 10” ft. Jemere Morgan deliver romance with a rude boy twist. On the EP’s first single “Sunshine,” Jo nimbly rhymes over a bubbling dancehall rhythm embellished by gentle guitar strands. Jo came up with “Sunshine’s” melodic hook while singing to his baby sister and is one of the EP’s most intimate songs.

Check out the joint premiere of “Sunshine” on Complex and Boomshots.

Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley grew up surrounded by music. By the time he was four years old, Jo was appearing onstage alongside his father, his uncle Ziggy and aunts Cedella and Sharon (a.k.a. Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers) and their children as part of the group’s rousing concert finales with Jo often taking the mic and chanting the lyrics to the Melody Makers’ biggest songs. Born in Kingston, Jamaica on March 12, 1991, Jo moved to Miami at age 11 where he keenly observed his father and his uncle Damian as they created music in Stephen’s Lion’s Den studio. Back then school was the priority for Jo; traveling with Ziggy and the Melody Makers was reserved for school breaks and summer vacations, yet those experiences provided first hand opportunities for Jo to expand his musical aspirations beyond the performance stage. He started making beats when he was about 11 and then began focusing on his songwriting and vocal delivery.

As Jo career progresses, he looks forward to making his mark as an individual artist while continuing the Marley musical legacy. “My father calls my grandfather a magician because he was the only man who could bring peace to his country (during Jamaica’s deadly political skirmishes of the 1970s) and that’s a lot of power, influence, it’s magic, but I don’t let it get to my head,” Jo declares. “He made a big step for Jamaican music and it is time for me to add my works to it, to build on it. I am just getting started; I am just getting Comfortable.”
