The event’s theme was “Honoring women of our day and time.”

Marie-Claire, who received her classical training in Italy, Los Angeles and New York, is a regular performer at New York jazz hot spots Farafina Cafe and Lounge and the Metropolitan Room. She has performed throughout the New York City area including representing the Bronx as a finalist at the 2013 Battle of the Boroughs and performing the American national anthem at a New York Nets vs. Detroit Pistons basketball game Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

2014 is already a promising year for the singer who is currently penning lyrics to four pieces by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Harbison. • Marie-Claire to be honoured by NAACP

Bronx NY – Last Saturday 15th March 2014, the Williamsbridge branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), will as part of their Women’s History Month celebration, honour Dominica-born singer marie-claire, in recognition and celebration of her extraordinary accomplishments and service to the community.

“marie-claire is a singer without limitation who is accomplished in several genres and we say bravo to her and welcome her into the group of honorees,”

Says event host and President of the Westbridge NAACP, Julian McDavid.

A regular act at New York jazz hot spots Farafina Cafe and Lounge as well as the Metropolitan Room; marie-claire is oftentimes backed by her own jazz quartet. She has performed throughout the New York City area including representing the borough of the Bronx as a finalist at the 2013 Battle of the Boroughs and performing the American national anthem at a New York Nets vs. Detroit Pistons basketball game in the newly built Barclays centre in Brooklyn. In January 2014, famed American composer John Harbison gifted marie-claire with 4 unique compositions to which she is currently penning lyrics. The Pulitzer Prize award-winning Harbison said he was “priviledged” to compose music for marie-claire who he described as “an abundantly talented singer” possessing “a genuine contralto voice and magnetic stage presence.”

marie-claire moved from Dominica to the Bronx at age 4 and returned to the Nature Isle in to explore her familial and musical roots. While on island she hosted and produced a video countown show and spearheaded and co-organized the Year of the Child Concert series. She has performed at several festivals and concerts throughout the region including Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival (Jamaica), Love is all we Need Concert (Antigua), Jazz on the Green (St. Vincent) and le Voces de Jazz Festival (Columbia).

Prior to making her operatic debut at Carnegie Hall, marie-claire was classically trained at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome and still continues to perfect her vocal instrument. She has to-date released an EP entitled dreamland which features the operatic versions of well-known reggae songs “dreamland” and “rasta man chant” (featuring Spragga Benz), as well as “constellation” as song penned for her by famous Jamaican singer/songwriter Bob Andy.

Along with marie-claire, the NAACP will also recognize 6 other outstanding honoree: Janet Hunter, a workforce development coach affiliated with Albert Einstein College of Medicine; Evern Gillard-Randolph, Founder of Grandparents around the World Productions, Inc; Dr.Gloria Bradshaw, Pastor of the Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in Harlem; Pamela Johnson, President of the School Board and Executive Director of Urban Neighborhood and the Eastchester Heights Community Center; Latisha Russaw, Mayor’s Office of Veterans’ Affairs Military Liaison and Angelique Banks-Coleman, Director of Christian Education and Minister of Music and Worship Arts at Burke Avenue Baptist Church.

The NAACP event took place Saturday March 15th 2014 at 12noon in Eastwood Manor, 3371 Eastchester Road, Bronx New York.

    3

Using the theme of ‘Inspiring Change,’ Natasha shared her story of beginning her journey in Toronto, Canada, and making a change in her community of Reggae and Caribbean culture, by developing an internationally respected monthly publication that celebrates the best in Music, the Arts and Entertainment; the ripple effect to that change are the women who have a platform to express their talent in journalism and graphic design. “I knew I could make a difference, and I always aspired for my difference to be on an international level. We have a lot of success stories, and I want L3 Magazine to be a conduit for those stories to be told” said Natasha. Moving forward towards new goals, Natasha continued “Everything we need to achieve success with our goals is right here in this room, and I look forward to continuing my work with women in the international community and sharing their stories as we continue to transform our dreams to reality.”

In addition to Natasha Von Castle, esteemed women, Dr. Cheryl Hill (President, Integrity International Consulting Group), Dr. Remi Alapo (United Nations representative for GEFAI), Lucy Kanu (CEO of Idea Builders Initiative), Beryl Green (Chairwoman, New York Metro Chapter for Women’s Federation for World Peace), and Ijeoma Opara spoke to delegates about their individual and organizational work, and how the world will benefit when all parties work together. “We are in a unique position to collaborate” noted Dr. Cheryl Hill. “Our collaboration will ensure that we continue to make changes in our communities. We have the platform to do it, and we’re getting it done!”

At the conclusion of the conference, speakers and delegates joined Madam Yoo (Ban) Soon-taek – Wife of the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, Muna Rihani Al Nasser, Chair, UN Women for Peace, Naomi Campbell, Trudy Styler, and more than 400 women and men on a march that ended with encouraging speeches regarding gender equality, and a call to end violence and abuse against women. The march, organized by UN Women for Peace, was sponsored by UN Women, a major new agency that consolidates the advocacy for women’s rights and gender equality. Their campaigns include Unite to End Violence against Women, Stop Rape Now and Network of Men Leaders. Within the UN itself, the Secretary General has increased the number of women in Senior Management positions by more than 40% reaching the highest level in the Organization’s history.

Perfect Pussy are one of the boldest and most intriguing projects to surface in recent years, garnering widespread critical acclaim following a self-released four song cassette-only EP, titled I have lost all desire for feeling. Veiled beneath layers of exquisitely abrasive noise, frontwoman Meredith Graves’ lyrics are disarming, brutally honest and poetic, possessing a feverish intensity that can only be matched by her electric stage presence. The band’s debut full length and first release on Captured Tracks, Say Yes to Love, is a frenetic and fast-paced juggernaut, capturing a pivotal young band just as it’s ready to explode.

The forthcoming album, KLUDGE, is coming out May 20th on Saddle Creek. With a magnetic stage presence and highly intellectual lyrical focus, PUJOL never fails to deliver an immensely fun, electric live show.

  • Road International Brings Strong Social Concept to the Party Scene ‘Nerd vs Bully’

New York, New York – For many of us attending parties helps us to release some stress, dance and enjoy the music. During a party sometimes hundreds maybe thousands of people gather socially to have a great time. For the DJs of Road International they are always thinking to take the party scene one step further.

DJ Bully, Mad Scientist and Mr Crump of Road International have brought a socially fused concept to the dancehall scene. They should be applauded for bringing a strong message and awareness to the party scene, which so often is many hundreds and thousands gather. Approximately two years ago Road International started an event called Nerd vs Bully. No one on the sound would consider themselves a nerd or ever being a bully but all members are very familiar with people who have been bullied or may have low self esteem.

Mr. Crump, who wears glasses, has always been one to embrace the look of ‘”the nerd”. ‘I’ve never been bullied or teased but jokingly friends have called me a nerd and its a title I’vee taken on and capitalized on it via my musical image” says Mr. Crump.

Never short of the females surrounding him and friends Mr. Crump has made it his objective to let others know that being a nerd is okay. For DJ Mad Scientist, he says ” Just be yourself and try to know who you are and your goals you want to achieve in life. Your confidence and originality is what makes us all great people”.

DJ Bully is very animated, although NOT a Bully, he is very outgoing. ‘I’ve always been the ‘popular kid’ the one who hangs out with a lot of friends and always trying to be a leader”. The term bully for DJ Bully is one he took on as his musical image because he is a big advocate of being yourself, think outside the box and bully your inner self. Bullying your inner self is a mind set DJ Bully uses, which helps one to push themselves to always achieve more. “Never bully another individual that only takes away the time and focus on you becoming a better individual” says DJ Bully.

With Road International being strong advocates of being yourselves and getting along with each other, they have decided to take the concept to the party scene and bring some awareness to the message ‘be yourself’. ‘Whether you embrace the ‘Nerd’ or you embrace ‘Bully’ on Friday, March 7th at Kerryels Banquet Hall, 127-08 Atlantic Ave. Queens, NY, you will see Road International bring everyone one together and enjoy the musical experience.

Nerd vs Bully is in its second year and have received great support from their fans and from people in the music industry. Road International has now garnered the interest of numerous college associations to bring the concept, Nerd vs Bully to their campuses and partake in several workshops.

“We are happy to know this concept is growing and we look forward to attending the colleges and impact any life we encounter during our Nerd vs Bully College Tour”.

Grenadian producer Shawn “Mr. Roots” Mitchell started producing and releasing music under his production house Mr. Roots Productions since 2003, which has now been rebranded as WIZ Records, having evolved from just a production house to a record label. Mr. Roots also earned his stripes as the bassist for soca star Machel Montano’s HD Band, until departing recently to focus on his record label. • African Royalty Reigns a New York Runway

Each season fashion week in New York offers emerging fashion designers who take a unique approach to conceptualizing apparel. Concepts can range from colors, shape texture and a combination of everything that the creative mind can conceive. This season TeKay Designs, a couture studio based in Houston Texas, presented Queen of the Brides, a collection of gowns with accessories that are historic and have a cultural significance.

TeKay’s presentation opened with an acoustic chorus sound track, chromatic luminance and a branded light projection. Ethnic diversity was applied to model selection; as each model graced the catwalk with authoritarian elegance. But not without a subtle ‘vogue pose’ here and there. While some gowns are accented with colorful embroidery, other gowns cast an angelic shimmer of beading as a decorative finish.

The Queen of the Brides collection represents inspirational women of royalty from various cultures throughout history. The collection exemplifies cultures, as each gown represents a woman of royalty who has left an indelible mark on humanity. “Each season new gowns are added to this collection” explains Kimma Wreh, Fashion Designer and Creative Director for TeKay Designs. “Women of royalty are represented from all over the globe through these gowns. Places such as Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. The gowns express cultural themes that resonate with many ethnic groups. This is why it was important for Queen of the Brides collection to be presented in New York City. New York is a melting pot of cultures and I am proud to present a bridal collection that acknowledges style aesthetics that many cultures have contributed to humanity.”

    • The first of four new looks is an embroidered satin gown with trumpet silhouette that is named after Queen Amina of Zaria, Nigeria. The gown is delicately hand embroidered with striking green leaves and gold flowers. Queen Amina launched a military expedition three months after coming to power and sustained a lengthy battle until her death. In her thirty-four year reign, she expanded the domain of Zazzua to its largest size ever.
    • Queen Nzingha Amazon of Matamba West Africa is represented with elaborate hand stitched gold and chocolate embroidery on a bustier top and skirt made of white super cotton jacquard. This bridal ensemble is accessorized with a royal headpiece constructed of gold beads, glass pearls and rhinestone trim on a gold wire bed. The beaded floor length veil and statement necklace completes this royal look. Queen Nzingha Amazon was a tactical military leader who waged war against the Portuguese slave traders. This war lasted for more than thirty years. Nzingha was of Angoloan descent and is known as a symbol of inspiration for people across continental Africa.
    • The Empress Candace of Ethiopia gown has champagne colored lace fabric that covers the body and cathedral train. Scalloped lace trim is stitched on dress bodice with crystal trim around neckline. One of the greatest generals of the ancient world was also the Empress of Ethiopia. This formidable African Queen was world famous as a military tactician and field commander. Legend has it that Alexander The Great could not entertain even the possibility of risking a defeat… by this woman.
    • The fourth addition to the collection emulates Queen Consort Margherita of Savoy, Italy. This bridal attire has a peplum top and mermaid skirt made of beaded lace fabric embellished with silver rhinestone trim. Queen Margherita sponsored artists, writers and founded cultural institutions, notably the Societa del Quartetto, and the Casa di Dante. She was a benefactor of many charities, specifically the Red Cross.

The Queen of the Brides collection was accessorized for dramatization during the couture fashion show. However, each dress can be styled for a more contemporary look and accompanied with an optional matching brides maids dress. “This spring we are offering specials to brides who order matching bridal party dresses, gown accessories or statement jewelry pieces. We specialize in gown creations for themed weddings, and we have a reputation for creating custom ethnic fashions. We believe sharing cultural royalty is a significant way to pass on the legacy and heritage of family.” explains Kimma.

  • Soca Star Farmer Nappy Releases New Album, Signs Endorsement Deal with Monster Energy Drink

    2

New York, NY – Soca star Darryl “Farmer Nappy” Henry brings the spirit of Trinidad Carnival to the global masses with his new album Big People Party, now available worldwide from all major digital retailers, as well as physical CD in stores, from FOX FUSE. Celebrating over 30 years in music, the accomplished and acclaimed Trinidadian singer/songwriter delivers the very best that soca music has to offer with this new collection of hits on his third full-length studio effort. It is the only album that is released internationally by an artist during Trinidad’s Carnival 2014 season.

“It’s an amazing feeling to put out two albums in two years, and also being the only soca artist to release an album worldwide during this Carnival season, so the fans here at Trinidad Carnival and also across the globe can enjoy the sweet sounds of soca,” states Farmer Nappy. “I’m really grateful with the reception of the album Big People Party and the lead single ‘Big People Party,’ which is playing non-stop on radio and is a crowd favorite at all the shows. A big thanks to everyone who worked on this album with me and also to everyone who is supporting me.”
Blazing across airwaves and on playlists at fetes and festivals with his new blockbuster smash single “Big People Party,” Farmer Nappy is a top contender in the 2014 International Groovy Soca Monarch Competition, already securing his place in the finals, which takes place on “Fantastic Friday,” February 28 at the national stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The lead single “Big People Party” is currently charting at #1 on several music charts in Trinidad, including topping the charts of Trinidad’s hit radio station, RED 96.7FM, and also top website, TriniJungleJuice.com. His other hit singles include “Doh Stick,” “Family,” “Stranger” and “Minglin’,” and he collaborated with soca’s top hit-makers including De Red Boyz from Barbados, Precision Productions from Trinidad and Studio 758 (Penn & Ace) from St. Lucia, contributing to the album’s all-inclusive island vibes.

Adding fuel to his fire, Monster Energy Drink has partnered with Farmer Nappy to be its brand ambassador from now through the Carnival 2015 season, further cementing his role as the prime representative for soca music, both at home and beyond. “Making Farmer Nappy an official ambassador was a decision that took little thought,” discloses Monster Energy Brand manager, Leigh Inalsingh. “Monster Energy sees themselves as more than an energy drink, they see themselves as a lifestyle in a can, and this made soca star Farmer Nappy the perfect fit.” Jonas Zakour, Monster’s Regional Manager, describes Farmer Nappy as “energetic, hardworking and talented, everything that the brand represents.” He adds, “We are excited to have him as an official member of the Monster Energy family.”
Having built a global fan base through his music and touring extensively for over two decades, Farmer Nappy is synonymous with bringing the sounds of mas to the masses worldwide. He is currently performing on more than 60 shows during this Carnival season in Trinidad, which began in January and culminates on March 4, known as Carnival Tuesday. Armed with his new hits to stay competitive at home and new album on sale globally, Farmer Nappy is a true Caribbean music icon and cultural ambassador, and Big People Party serves up an ultimate musical celebration for all, for years to come.

  • Saint Lucia Welcomes Back ABC’s The Bachelor for Final Rose Ceremony

Saint Lucia – Chris Harrison, the host of ABC’s hit romance reality series The Bachelor, will return with the show to the island of Saint Lucia to host the final two episodes of the season, including the highly anticipated Final Rose Ceremony. The episodes are set to air on Tuesday, February 25, and Monday, March 10, 2014. The Bachelor, currently in its 18th season and starring Bachelor Juan Pablo Galavis, has visited Saint Lucia before, most recently with Bachelor Jake Pavelka during season 14 of the series.

“The Bachelor has become a staple in reality television. The fans of this show religiously tune in season after season. We feel privileged to once again share in this journey toward love with them,” says Tracey Warner Arnold, deputy director of tourism for the Saint Lucia Tourist Board.

When Juan Pablo Galavis, a former professional soccer player from Venezuela, stepped out of the limo last season to meet Bachelorette Desiree Hartsock, he also stepped into the hearts of female fans across the country. Women were taken with his sincerity, easy-going charm and good looks. The dashing single dad, very devoted to his young daughter, Camila, was ready to find love. Despite failing to win Desiree’s heart, Juan Pablo became one of the most talked-about men of the season; now, he is back with his own chance to find the love of his life and a wife — as well as a stepmother to his daughter — from among 27 beautiful bachelorettes.
