  • Junior Kelly and fans enjoyed love so nice at Moe’s Alley

Reggae loving fans converged on Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, California on Saturday night for what they hoped would have been the triumphant return of roots reggae champion, Junior ‘Love So Nice’ Kelly, to the West Coast, and they were extremely pleased with the outcome.
In the run-up to last Saturday’s concert (June 9) Junior Kelly had expressed his enthusiasm for the event and had promised fans during his many interviews that it would be a night to remember. In true Junior Kelly style, the entertainer made good on his promise and gave a solid performance lasting one hour and five minutes.
He wooed fans with the old, the new and those songs in between; the vibe was on a constant high and in many instances the fans sang along word-for-word. The women at the very front of the venue — most of them Caucasian — seemed to be transfixed by the dreadlocked crooner and right after he exited centerstage, they were the first ones in line waiting patiently for an autograph and a hug as they posed for pictures.
“It’s just the Junior Kelly effect,” one female fan explained with a shrug as she swayed to the love songs being belted out by the singer.
Backed by a live band, Junior Kelly organised his set with precision and his delivery was on point. Among the songs that he performed from his catalog were Tough Life, Believe In Yourself, Been There, Heads Up, Rebel Music, Boom Draw and Missing You, all of which struck the right chord with the audience.
In closing, Junior Kelly unleashed the song that refuses to get old, Love So Nice, followed by another mega hit, Receive. Naturally, both were very well received, especially since the singer, during his performance of Receive, made his way into the audience and greeted fans up close and personal.
At that point, Moe’s Alley, “tun ova”.
Junior Kelly had made his longed for return in a massive way.
Speaking with the press post-show, an enthusiastic Kelly noted that he was overwhelmed and fulfilled by the response and the attentiveness of the crowd. “There was a blind Caucasian man in the audience and that man showed so much appreciation for reggae music, it was humbling. I can’t find words to describe all the various range of emotions that went through me as I stood on stage and looked down into the crowd. I could feel the love from the fans and that made it so easy to pour it all back. As an artiste, you can know just how much you are appreciated by the number of people who stay back for autographs and to purchase your CD’s and, look for yourself,” he said pointing to the long line of people waiting patiently on him.
He added, “My one-hour on stage felt so short, but that’s how it is when you are having a great time. I want to thank all the fans for turning out and big respect to the promoter and his team. I will definitely be back, but for now, it’s onto the next show where we hope the vibe will match up to this one,” Junior Kelly said smiling.
The show also featured singer Prestige, an artiste who has steadily been making a name for himself. Prestige rocked Moe’s Alley with songs such as “Give Thanks”, “Blessed”, “Smile”, “Free” and “Tender Love”, during a 40-minute set that went down well.

  • USA Tour 2012

Roots reggae champion, Junior ‘Love So Nice’ Kelly, is quite upbeat as he makes his way across the West Coast of the United States to re-connect with fans and share with them his catalogue of hit songs.
The tour, which also features singer Prestige, along with a live band, brings Kelly to a stage that has been yearning for him for too long. Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz — the one in California, not the Santa Cruz in St Elizabeth, Jamaica — will host the kick-off show on June 9 and anticipation is running high.
Last year, Junior Kelly did the European circuit and this was hailed as significant. Armed with his VP album, Red Pond, a critically acclaimed reggae offering, Kelly’s tour towards the end of 2011, re-established him as a authentic exponent of the genre.
Kelly, remarkably, has stayed true to his roots reggae format, despite the urging from producers and artistes alike to make a foray into something different. He is known around the world for his extensive catalogue, which includes the chart-topping classic “Love So Nice,” “Smile,” “Receive” and “Sunshine.” These songs will form part of the list of hits that the singer will use to rock fans in California during the month of June.
“I will be arriving a few days early because it’s good to get in tune with the people by being in their space and getting that connection before showtime,” the affable singer declared.
According to Kelly’s management team, which includes Triple T Productions, they were quite happy to work with the promoters to ensure the success of the events, hence a media blitz which will see the singer making the press rounds, both print and electronic, in the run-up to each event.
“Fortunately, Junior Kelly is one of those artistes who understands that being prepared for a show means doing the interviews, getting comfortable on the social networking sites and informing your fans of your whereabouts and turning up on time for rehearsals and all those great stuff associated with touring,” Tasz Smith of Triple T explained.
Joining Kelly on the Love So Nice – Red Pond Tour is Roots Reggae soldier Prestige, whose singles “Dem Wrong,” “My Pride,” and “Smoke Free” have garnered a considerable following throughout the United States and the Caribbean.
His latest single “The Questions” is currently burning up airwaves around the world.

  • Toronto-based PAN FANTASY STEELBAND celebrates 26th anniversary on June 23rd

Toronto-based, award-winning Pan Fantasy Steelband presents “A Night of Fantasy Under the Stars” to commemorate its 26th anniversary. This event will take place under a specially-erected tent at Downsview Park, 32 Carl Hall Road, Toronto on Saturday June 23rd, 2012; showtime: 7pm.

Since Pan Fantasy is a North York-based steelband with its pan yard located at Downsview, it is a natural fit for it to host its upcoming event within this community’s neighbourhood.

“Last year, we orchestrated our anniversary show under a tent at Downsview, and it was totally beautiful,” says Wendy Jones, band leader and business manager. “The tent provided an opportunity for people to experience us in a different setting … not a hall. And since our fans had such a wonderful time last year, we decided to provide that same ambience again this year. There will be several special guests appearing including a house DJ, comedian(s), special pan soloists, and popular Caribbean calypsonians.”

Pan Fantasy Steelband’s performance repertoire comprises calypso, classical, reggae, jazz, Latin, pop, R&B, Soca, etc. This steelband’s players range in age from 14 to 65. It has a strong youth element; 40% of whom attend college/university during the winter months. However, during the annual summer months, Pan Fantasy’s experienced performers swell to its competition size of 75+ musicians.

Responsible for its sound is award winning arranger Al “Allos” Foster. Highly respected within the steelpan community, Foster has been Pan Fantasy’s principal arranger for the past 10 years. He was at the helm when Pan Fantasy won the Toronto “Pan Alive” Competition for 2005 and 2006. His stella arrangements have maintained Pan Fantasy’s position as one of the best Toronto-based steelbands for the past five years.

They perform at many types of private functions including weddings, birthdays, corporate functions, galas, and community events using a core stage side of 25-35 members.

Under Jones’ outreach stewardship, Pan Fantasy has also performed for the past three years with other traditional drumming communities including the Native drumming community based on Manitoulin Island, and with the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve.

“Both of our indigenous communities see the drum as a sacred beat connecting the love and life of the human realm with the heart beat of Mother Earth,” says Jones.

Tickets for “A Night Under the Stars” include dinner: $25 (adv); $30 (door); group rates available for tables of 10. For more info contact: 416-525-2391; 416-567-9103; www.panfantasysteelband.com.

  • Mark Hardy makes major musical movements

In his quest to carry his Caribbean-inspired sound to the global masses, Trinidad and Tobago’s Ragga-Fusion artiste Mark Hardy has made unmistakable progress in today’s ever-challenging music industry landscape. From creating cross-genre collaborations to interacting with international artistes, this emerging T&T talent is consistently blazing a trail towards becoming a household name.
Hardy, whose real name is Marcus Braveboy, made waves in the local and regional entertainment circuit with his 2010 single, “Lyrical Apology” and its cinematic accompanying music video. Today, with a steadily growing fan base in the Caribbean, North-America, Europe and even New Zealand, he is pushing the creative envelope with his new release “Ta Buena La Cosa”.
This latest musical contribution is a latin-flavoured love song featuring Mark Hardy together with singer Dia aka Claudia Cruz (who is a former Miss Dominican Republic and 1st runner at the Miss World competition). The celebration kicked off with a feature on FOX Network where Ruth performed her latest single, “Any Day Now” and her debut single, “Unfamiliar Feelings” to over a million viewers.

Ruth, her management (Ric Zheron) and producer (Rhoan Bromfield of Bran-Nu Entertainment), were thrilled about the news. Bran-Nu Entertainment, a multi-faceted organization specializing in management, publishing, distribution and licensing have been a strategic driving force in exposing Reggae music to unconventional markets; securing licensing deals for Ruth with international airlines travelling to territories such as Europe, Africa and Asia. • Trinidad’s PengCo Music Leans on Jamaican Music Powerhouse to Complete Planet X Riddim

PengCo Music in Trinidad and Tobago is determined to make the sound of music out of the twin island nation, stand firmly beside that of large countries such as the US and Europe. So bent are they on making this happen that the team, manned by Randal Alexander has upped their game, recently completing work on a new state of the art studio where they’re currently installing the best hardware money can buy, with one goal in mind. Yesterday, June 8, PengCo Music premiered a brand new riddim and according to the music production experts, the sound emanating from this one, is word class.

Squeezy Rankin, Buffy and Chucky are three of the big names on the Planet X riddim. It’s just in time for what’s commonly referred to as the summer period worldwide and according to Alexander the difference heard in this riddim, as compared to any other that’s been released out of PengCo Music, lies in the belly of the all -round sound. “I always aim to avoid being redundant so I work with a lot of different people to get their influence because after a while a person’s sound starts sounding the same,” explained Alexander. He said this time around he sought out the help of a young drummer who is known to strike up big soca beats. “ This is a young guy by the name of AG. This is actually the first production he’s worked on. He plays drums with a soca band,” he said, adding that what AG was able to do, was offer some soca elements to the Planet X riddim. Alexander said the nice thing about this particular riddim is the fusion of dancehall and soca, which as he explained, will certainly work well for the upcoming Crop Over carnival festival in Barbados. Assuring that most if not all of the tracks on the riddim, which also features newcomers Kazee and Tuff among others, will seamlessly mix with dancehall and soca tracks, Alexander is confident that DJs across the board will love playing around with the singles on the Planet X riddim.

PengCo Music has been delivering ‘A’ class productions for a number of years. This time around, the team formed a unique alliance with Jamaica’s Anju Blax of UIM Records. Alexander made it known that the Jamaican music unit is well respected for its great work, having been responsible for some of the best music mixes out of Jamaica in recent years. He explained that Blax is responsible for the post production of the Planet X riddim and while in the real world most producers and music engineers who mix the music after pre-production are left without credit, he feels credit is due to the UIM team in Jamaica for the amazing final product.

As PengCo Music continues its journey to making the Trinidad and Tobago music market better equipped to stand alongside its international counterparts in terms of sound and quality, the Planet X riddim has been released. It’s just the first in a number of projects in the pipeline at the moment. In the weeks ahead, Alexander and his team at PengCo Music will be forging relationships with some very big names in Caribbean music and subsequent to that, the world will feel the impact of the team’s musical genius. For now, PengCo Music invites the world at large to enjoy what they assure are some hit singles on the Planet X riddim, sung by some very hard working, young artistes.

  • Ravi B and Karma represent T&T to the fullest in Orlando

The excitement and energy emanating from venues the likes of Disney World and Universal Studios was challenged last weekend by the electricity of Orlando’s 2012 Carnival. Adding to the high-powered festivities was a virtual menu of musical talent featuring a Chutney-Soca flavoured main course from Trinidad and Tobago’s very own Karma.

During this year’s celebrations the famed crossover band victoriously flew the flag of T&T high in Orlando while simultaneously creating a frenzy among both Caribbean and non-Caribbean audiences with its appearances at the weekend’s string of major events. The band members which included lead vocalists Ravi and Nisha Bissambhar and their brother Anil (who serves as the band’s engineer) were all thrilled to be a part of Orlando’s 25th anniversary Carnival.

Karma, which is known for its versatility and mastery of music genres, pumped up the patrons at the “D’ Ultimate Day Wet Fete” with its lively performance. The band had the attendees singing along to each song in its diverse repertoire which included everything from Soca smashes and Chutney hits to Pop favourites and classic Bollywood ballads. Most notably, the Chutney-Soca ensemble also headlined the major post-parade concert at the Festival Field in Orlando. With its vibrant Soca set Karma spearheaded a cast comprising Soca stars Shurwayne Winchester, K-Rich and a host of Florida’s finest entertainers much to the delight of the capacity crowd.

In addition to being cultural ambassadors for T&T, on this tour Ravi, Nisha and Anil were reunited with their sister Nalini-Bissambhar-Sankar who resides in Florida. Nalini, much like her Trinidad-based siblings is also musically gifted and spreads Caribbean culture throughout the ‘Sunshine State’ and greater US with her band called Dimensionz.

Members of the Orlando Carnival Cultural Association (the organizers of Orlando’s Carnival), Gemini Production (Top US/Caribbean event producers) as well as fans and participants have expressed their pleasure and appreciation for Karma’s presence in this year’s Carnival and their desires for another performance from the dynamic band in the not too distant future.

Former Chutney-Soca Monarch Ravi B revealed that as Karma gears up to release a monster collaboration with one of Soca’s hottest performers and to launch the Ravi B and Karma mobile app on Blackberry, Nokia and Android platforms the members are also in preparation mode for their annual Fathers Day spectacular on June 16th in Trinidad and a feature performance at the first “Chutney Fire Fete” on July 1st in Toronto, Canada.
