  • Nisha B promises unforgettable evolution for 2012

Even with numerous achievements and Caribbean music accolades under her belt and after having earned the respect and approval of her industry counterparts including Soca King Machel Montano, Nisha Bissambhar continues to strive for further creative excellence in 2012. This year will see new developments and evolution in the Chutney-Soca Princess’ career and unique entertainment brand. From her formative years as a little girl watching her late father singing on stage to her present period of headlining shows in cities such as Barcelona, Holland, Toronto, New York and Orlando (many times as the sole female act on a predominantly male cast), this East Indian beauty has always been on a constant mission to learn, grow and re-invent herself. Even with the very daunting task of juggling a hectic performance and touring schedule with her band Karma along with her late night radio presenter duties on 90.5fm and her position of host for Synergy TV’s Chutney Island, Nisha is still able to balance her personal and professional life and still bring forth new ventures and music releases for her beloved fans and supporters (who she considers her inspiration and motivation for succeeding in this industry). Nisha B who is known for her mastery and fusion of musical genres, having pioneered the trend of mixing and infusing Soca, Hip-Hop, Reggae and Dance/Pop into her band’s Indian Film song repertoire, has released 4 new Indian film remixes produced by Big Rich of the ‘The Punkalunks Factory. Most notably, just in time for Carnival band launch season, she will be unleashing some new original songs written and produced by Klase Gonzales of First Klase productions and has plans for some Pop music productions as well as a Bhajan CD entitled “Karma Mangalam 2” later on in the year. She also promises accompanying videos for her new music. In addition to keeping it versatile and stylish on the music front, Nisha recently started a line of jewellery called ‘Crown Jewels’ which features materials sourced from various places around the world. She plans to expand on this line and to also open a clothing boutique. This busy bee who has performed and recorded with artistes the likes of Beenie Man, Allison Hinds, Anil Bheem, Ziggy Rankin, Kees Dieffenthaller and Busy Signal guarantees more collaborations and surprises and shared, “I am aspiring to be a leader in my industry so that my music, my performances, my fashion, my life would be not only be memorable but serve as positive examples for others when I retire. And of course my ultimate goal is motherhood; I cannot wait to have a mini me, a little Nisha B”. • New Single: “Heart Of A Champion” – Celebrates Jamaica 50th Independence & 2012 Olympic Team

The summer of 2012 will be recorded in Jamaican history books as a significant moment in time for a number of reasons. The main reason being on August 6, 2012, Jamaica will celebrate its 50th year of independence from British Colonial Rule.

Another reason is all eyes will be on London for the 30th anniversary of the Olympic Games, where Jamaica’s best athletes will defend their crowns as the reigning kings and queens of sprint.

The culmination of these historic events, as well as ups and downs within his personal life, have inspired reggae artist Donny Yardas to write a song that he feels will not only motivate the athletes who will be competing in the Olympics, but also, motivate everyday people navigating thru the journey of life.

The song is entitled “Heart of A Champion,” and was produced by MadMax of Snypaa Entertainment/A-TEAM Music Group.

  • Monster March premieres this Friday, presented by Lordstreet Theatre, Arts in Action & the OWTU

Set for a premiere on Friday 29th June at the historic Palms Club in San Fernando, Tony Hall’s Lordstreet Theatre, the Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) and Arts-in-Action present MONSTER MARCH, in celebration of the OWTU’s 75th anniversary.
Running 29th and 30th June, the play is written by the veteran actor, director, and playwright Tony Hall, along with brother Dennis ‘Sprangalang’ Hall and Errol Sitahal, with music by Andre Tanker and direction by Arts-in-Action’s Marvin George. The play explores the history of the OWTU, and features a stellar cast including Lylah Persad, Arnold Goindhan, Brendon Lacaille, Mark Nottingham, Marcus Waldron, Noel Blandin and The Workers, a chorus led by Kurtis Gross.
Originally presented in 1987 to commemorate 50 years of the history of workers’ struggle in Trinidad and Tobago, MONSTER MARCH is set against the backdrop of The Federal Bar. The play presents – in graphic terms – the realities of its regular patrons: Customs Man, the comfortable public servant; Miss Maraj, the helper; Unemployed Man, the job-less labourer; News, the rum-shop philosopher; and Mr. Ragbir, the bar owner. The in-house tensions reflect the uneasy rumblings of the workers outside led by Union Man and local workers’ movements across time.
MONSTER MARCH promises to be dynamic, humorous, informative and even transformative as it touches on critical issues, like the merits of trade unions, race relations and the citizens’ role in developing our young nation
Co-author Tony Hall has a long career of documenting local lives and culture. He has worked with the Trinidad Theatre Workshop and at the pioneering Banyan Limited. In 1992 he co-directed the award-winning documentary, And the Dish Ran Away With the Spoon. His recent acclaimed tour-de-force, Miss Miles: the woman of the World, has played to sold-out audiences for several runs in Trinidad, while his acclaimed Jean and Dinah is being adapted into a feature film. Hall’s other plays include the powerful and provocative Twilight Café; and with David Rudder, the ground breaking calypso musical The Brand New Lucky Diamond Horseshoe Club. Hall’s work has been celebrated by local audience, critics and fellow writers as some of “the finest West Indian theatre” (Derek Walcott), a “triumph” (Earl Lovelace), and “lively…touching…powerful” (Judy Raymond).
Arts-in-Action (AiA) is the premier applied creative arts company in the Caribbean. As one of the outreach programmes of the Centre for the Creative and Festival Arts, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, it has revolutionised the way in which the arts work. AiA specialises in using the creative arts in the widest of developmental settings. From primary and secondary school interventions to community and corporate workshops, AiA uses arts based techniques to treat with issues ranging from change management to HIV/AIDS awareness to mathematics.
MONSTER MARCH runs two nights only: Friday 29th and Saturday 30th June. Tickets are $100 and $50 with valid student ID, and available from Cleve’s (Fredrick Street, 624-0827); the OWTU Port of Spain office (Henry Street, 623-6094); OWTU San Fernando office (Circular Road, 652-2701); and the TTUTA Head Office (Southern Main Road, Curepe, 645-2738).

  • The Summer of Stein – Jamaican Artist Hits High Notes with U.S.

Jamaican artist Stein, formerly Einstein, takes on U.S. audiences this summer, and is achieving great success with a slew of current hit singles. With three of his new tracks gaining airplay on New York’s HOT97, participating in a Russell Simmons-lead school tour, releasing his first single under his own record label, and preparing his debut album, it is truly the summer of Stein.

Emerging in 2007, Stein made a name in the dancehall game as a prolific lyricist, penning tunes that both entertained and provoked. He has also inked several hits for dancehall giants Bounty Killer and Beenie Man. Initially spewing hardcore lyrics, Stein’s current sounds have evolved with more global content, style and appeal.

“It is summer time year round in Jamaica and dancehall music was originally about partying, having fun and enjoying the vibes,” reveals Stein. “I’m capturing that timeless, international flavor of dancehall music in my current singles, and I hope my longtime fans and new ones can enjoy themselves, in and out of the dance halls.”

Working with the top producers in Jamaica adds unique flavor and flair to each of Stein’s current singles, most of which are being played on radio in Jamaica and on reggae specialty programming worldwide. Three of his singles are currently garnering coveted airplay on U.S. urban radio authority, HOT97 in New York City, played by Massive B’s Bobby Konders. The three hit tracks are “Shell Dung The Party” (Chimney Records), “Visa Buddy” and “Again & Again” (Cashflow Records).

His humanitarian side sees Stein giving back to the community as he is currently participating in a Russell Simmons initiative – a New York City school tour that promotes peace to students. This has Stein performing alongside the likes of rappers such as Maino, to high school students from Brooklyn to the Bronx. Stein was embraced on this tour as students sang along, word for word, to all of his songs (see video below). “Youths are our future and you have to support them in positive ways,” discloses Stein. “I’m eager to get involved in Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean to do the same outreach there.”

Stein Performs at the Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn, NY on June 11, 2012

Stein also releases his first single on his very own label New Planet Records, with the lover’s rock duet “Long Distance Relationship,” featuring dancehall princess Tiana. The single hits all major digital retailers worldwide on July 3, and is being distributed by FOX FUSE. This is merely the tip of the iceberg for Stein, as he prepares for the release of his debut album, which is currently in production.

  • Portland, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay Readies For Pull-Up And Play!

Two days shy of its premiere, Triple the Focus E-Zine prepares for the highly anticipated “Pull-up and Play” promo tour series aboard the Red Bull truck. The tour, which will feature performances by reggae artists Delus and Denyque and music by DJ Flabba Dabba, will make stops in Portland, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.

Geared at connecting reggae artists and fans on a more personal level, the tour will begin on Thursday, June 21, 2012 in Portland with stops at BDR Supermarket, Petals Supermarket and Road Block Bar. Shell Gas station has graciously agreed to offer their location in Ocho Rios and four of their other locations in Montego Bay for the Red Bull truck to pull-up and entertain patrons. Among other stops are General Foods, Rexo Supermarket and John Crows Tavern in Ocho Rios on Friday, June 22nd, M&K Supermarket, Dollars Bar, Jerkies and BayCity Supermarket in Montego Bay on Saturday, June 23rd.

Tour manager, Shantell “Shanz” Hill remarks, “I love the concept of giving artists another platform to connect with their fans. Other than a concert setting, fans rarely get the opportunity to meet the artists they love, face to face. It is a form of giving back and what better way to do so than on the Red Bull truck. Overall it is truly a great feeling to be a part of something new and fresh.”

Stacey Bethel, Editor-in-Chief for Triple the Focus adds, “We are working from the very premise of the magazine which is “to connect artists with their fans on a personal level” and to me that is what makes this a unique experience. A lot of work has gone into pulling this off but with the enthusiasm of everyone involved, it is worth it. My team and I are looking forward to doing this quarterly and hope that more sponsors will join us in making this a truly spectacular event so that we can make it happen on a monthly basis. It’s ambitious but we are committed.”

The tour is presented by Triple the Focus, a Music, Entertainment and Lifestyle E-Magazine published monthly. Released October 5, 2011, the goal of the E-zine is to provide a platform for industry insiders that will assist in connecting them with their fans on a more personal level.
